Improvisation in paint

Improvisation in paint

Course Dates Monday November 9th   2026

Improvisation is a skill that is essential for all artists, it is like a muscle that needs to be exercised. It is about being focused and curious. Emily and Katie will provide the materials, prompts and structure to play within. Through collaboration and repetition an exciting back and forth can start to flow, where the self critical voice becomes quiet. You will start to trust your own feelings and expertise. The aim is to always embrace ‘not knowing’ and find out as you work.

“Inspiration exists, but it has to find you working” Pablo Picasso.

You can think of it as training for all the future work that you do in your studio. In this state of play and flow you notice patterns; co-incidences and ‘random’ connections become openings to more poignant and personal poetic images and motifs. Results that previously you may have considered wrong instead become possibilities for invention. A subject can blossom from an unlikely starting point. ‘Not knowing’ will helpfully slow you down to allow the work to grow, and for you to respond. What is important, personal and relevant to you will become clear. Your courage will grow and painting will be a joyful discovery; a way of seeing the world with fresh eyes.

By the end of the day you will have created large and small paintings that you can take away with you. These may feel resolved or they inspire you to continue developing them further. You will have processes and prompts that will be directly helpful for your work with any subject, and give you focus and courage to push forward with your work. There will be a generosity with the materials that the studio will provide for you. We will work on paper (both large and small). Acrylic paints will be supplied and other mixed media. Just wear suitable clothes that don’t matter if they get paint on. Bring your lunch but tea, coffee and buscuits will be supplied throughout the day.
