Courses - Emily Ball @ Seawhite

These contemporary painting courses offered by Emily Ball studios have been running for 20 years. Emily Ball and her colleagues specialise in teaching painting and drawing. A wide variety of artists attend the courses and they all share a passion for art and their desire to be more adventurous and innovative.

If you are interested in enrolling in any of our courses you can register below. If the course has reached capacity you will be added to our waiting list. If you have any questions do not hesitate to contact us.

This year there are 3 opportunities to join us on our summer school out in the landscape. Each course runs for 5 days .

We will be making paintings inspired by the Cuckmere Haven Valley, over looking the sea and the Seven Sisters. For the first two days we will be based at the Coastguards Cottage. From there we will work in the surrounding landscape making lots of studies. For the final three days of the course we will be based in the Studio at Partridge Green, where you will make paintings from the studies and your memory of the experience. During the five days there will be space for experimentation, risk taking and development of work that goes beyond trying to copy what you see and instead becomes a much more expressive and personal response.

By registering for the first week of each term you are booking for all the weeks in the term. These sessions are practical, to help students develop ongoing work. Nick will provide practical exercises, slide shows of artists work and one to one tutorials. There will be space to put up your work, to stand back and see where you are going with your painting. At the end of each session each student will have practical processes at their finger tips to apply to their work, and a focus to work towards for the next session.
master class 2017

These Master Classes are ideal for painters with a lot of experience and who work regularly in their own studios. Four very intensive days gives each artist a productive focus and helps them to identify their ambition for their ongoing work. John, who since 2005 lives and paints in the South of France, has a justly deserved reputation as an outstanding teacher and painter. He shares his philosophy and passion for painting generously. Taking a ‘tough love’ approach to tutoring, John helps each artist to find ways of fully engaging with the materials, the poetic, the movement and their sensibilities of the subject they are working from. These classes are not for the faint-hearted: every artist on the course is encouraged to take positive risks with their work and celebrate the Joie de Vivre of painting. Emily Ball also contributes during the course giving practical demonstrations and support.
