My work is about building abstract structures with colour, form, texture and layering with interest to creating space. The current series of work has been influenced by daily walks I do in my local woods. Standing and looking at the stunning Chiltern landscapes, something triggers to remind me of the landscape I grew up in, South Korea. For this feeling, I seek to explore the sense of belonging and not belonging at the same time.
I enjoy using oil for its shimmering and impasto qualities. I use vibrant colours and bold strokes to reflect the complex hues and textures of nature. In places, I apply paint thickly with a palette knife to communicate the proximity.
Colour is important but the choice is usually one of intuition rather than having meaning or symbolic value. Through intuitive decision-making and the idea of chance and serendipity, I aim to create compositional dynamics, energy and rhythm in my work. In this process I am interested in exploring the relationship between memory and experience.
