I have been exploring a different way to paint and draw since I discovered Emily Ball. It is a way of forming deep connections with my subject matter and the challenge of trying to capture input from all the senses with various mark-making, colours and composition.
I began painting full time a few years ago but up until now my work has been primarily abstracted landscapes. I worked through the Paint Fit class with landscapes but since then I have used what I learned, plus what I learned from taking Floribunda online and working through her book, Drawing and Painting People, to work on this small collection of women.
It feels very vulnerable to put this work out in the open as it's very different from my normal work. My goal has been to capture the essence of complicated, three-dimensional women with minimal marks. These drawings (charcoal and graphite) and paintings (oil and graphite) - all on paper - are works in progress.
