Following the Thread - Drawing from textiles
Course Dates: 8th- 10th October 2025 (Wednesday - Friday)
Our fascination with and relationship to textiles runs deep and rich.
This course offers three days of looking at and drawing from a collection of textiles including, Kente cloth from Ghana, Kuba Cloth from the D.R.C, Nigerian Indigo cloth, Marsh Arab wedding cloth, Kelims, and Indian mirrored cloth, amongst others. As you draw the usual distinctions between abstraction and representation will happily dissolve. Complex and varied patterns will emerge and the haptic experience of handling material will find its expression in the touch and tactility of the drawn mark on paper.
You will be working at a variety of different scales with a broad range of drawing materials and approaches.
The studio is well stocked with Seawhite cartridge paper, with more specialist papers available from Nick. Please bring with you a wide range of drawing equipment.
There will be daily slide shows looking at the relationship between textiles and those areas of art practice more conventionally deemed ‘fine’.
This course is building upon the painting and pattern courses that Nick has run for a number of years at the Seawhite studio. Courses that have developed in collaboration with the passions and understanding of textiles brought by the many participants.
