Putting People into Painting - Term 1 Week 1
The course dates are the 19th & 20th October, 16th & 17th November and the 14th and 15th of December.
This is a tutor led course. There will be a model for the first 2 days. The course covers finding out different ways of making images of the figure using drawing, collage and painting then developing work from drawings and chosen sources.
This course explores the universal subject of people in a new and exciting way. The course begins with making observational drawings on paper, directly from the clothed model, in different set up situations. Students will also work in sketch books, combining collage work together with gathered information relevant to the figure; from magazines, photographs, films and other sources that are inspiring. Even everyday events provide valuable material; people waiting for the bus, sitting on the train, greeting at the airport, a lone figure walking in the park. Your paintings could capture and celebrate your astute observations of the quirks and expressions, the interaction and discussion between two or more people. The poise, posture and expression of a pose gives away the person and what they feel and are doing. Whether it is vulnerability, joy, love or any other human emotion.
Through individual tutoring and group discussions you will find your own expressive and personal approach to the figure; this will extend the subject of the figure in a variety of settings/environments. Using a broad range of materials, together with collected material and inspiration from artists such as Chantal Joffe, Grayson Perry, Marlene Dumas, Rose Wylie, Rubens, Velazquez, Goya, Georgia Hayes and Luc Tuymans, you will find new confidence and enjoyment in your work.
