Exploring Abstraction
Course dates: September 5th - 7th 2016 (Mon-Wed)
Starting with an explanation of, and slide show on, Process-based Abstraction , this course will explore the formal qualities of composition, colour, shape, scale, space, surface and edge in relation to the observable world around us. We will also explore the many benefits of working in series, in particular how critical judgments can develop from simple comparative preferences. This is particularly important because with non-representational work the critical yardstick of ‘does it look like the subject?’, no longer applies. Paint and its manipulation will be a central element of this course and in order to facilitate experimentation and speed up development, it is recommended that participants work in acrylic paint. A three day practical workshop with daily slide shows. .
