A Handful of Objects

Course dates are Monday May 23^rd - Wednesday May 25^th 2022

A Handful of Objects is a three day studio-based course led by Simon Carter, looking at how we can create energetic and inventive compositions based around objects and activity in the studio. Students will bring a group of objects into the studio and will start making paintings from direct ob-servation, seeing how inventive we can be while staying true to the familiar objects. We will then look at constructing larger pieces in a process of collaging and building, looking to find big composi-tions based on still life but with the lyricism and breadth of landscape.

Each student will bring a group of favourite objects with them: two man-made things, two natural things, two patterned things and reproductions of two favourite paintings. We will be working with acrylic paint on paper, painting, collaging, glueing together, building an image. Looking to make something large, dramatic, disruptive and daring.
