Colour on Colour - Oils and mediums
November 27th - 30th 2017 (Monday - Thursday)
Mixing colours can seem like a hit and miss process. It is helpful to understand which pigments have greater transparency and opacity. It is essential to know which yellows and which blues make which greens. It is wonderful to explore the subtle touch you can have to mix beautiful greys and browns. Layering and floating one colour on top of another can produce the most extraordinary optical ‘pop’ and ‘shimmer’. The most unlikely colour partnerships can be atmospheric, glowing and suggestive of light and subject. We will work with oils and fast drying, resin mediums and glazes to maximise the glorious properties of transparency and layering. Once we have got into the swing of working and layering colour we will make simple line drawings from a subject and then use these to create paintings that explore the push and pull, as we build up of colour on colour. The gifts that come from this process of layering and editing are slivers of colour that lift and make other colours vibrate. The paint and the colour will do the work for you. Students will make lots of exploratory pieces as well as 2 – 3 paintings to take away.
