Dear  ‍ ‍

Our tutors are not only great at devising exciting, innovative courses, but they choose subjects that they know about and that are part of their own working practice. This means that their courses are full of credible tips and advice that they know work!  Nick Bodimeade’s forthcoming short course is no exception.  Painting the Figure in the Landscape is a three day course that not only explores the subject of figure in its surroundings, but also how that subject can open up investigations into the nature of painting itself:

“Artists - even abstract artists or representational artists who never paint the figure directly - talk of the 'figure ground relationship' as a way of describing the interactions of forms, colours and so on within a painting. It’s in those interactions that the feeling, content and reading of the painting resides.” ~ Nick Bodimeade

As anyone wo has attended one of Nick’s previous courses would expect, there will be daily slideshows devised by Nick to provide a comprehensive understanding of the course’s themes and to provoke lively group discussions. Add to this Nick’s generous and thoughtful teaching style, complete with insightful tutorials and practical advice – and you have the recipe for a an inspiring and enriching course!

There is an idea that a landscape painting without a human figure makes the viewer imaginatively project themselves into the painted space. And so the work becomes about the viewer’s connection to the landscape and whoever or whatever created it.  The addition of a figure to the landscape can dramatically shift their reading and thoughts about a painting, as it can be used to convey feelings of belonging or isolation.

“In Casper David Freidrich’s ‘Monk by the Sea’ don’t we wonder what the monk thinking about?  When we put a figure into the landscape the whole dynamic changes, and we wonder: what the figure is thinking, doing; what is their relationship with their surroundings and what is ours to them? That’s no small thing!” ~ Nick Bodimeade

One of the key ideas that this course will explore is  how the figure and its surroundings are integrated, both in our subject matter and in our paintings. How the figure is embedded in the landscape and in the space and material of the painting. Looking at how paint becomes light and form, how the figure can emerge or dissolve into its surroundings, and how this unstable visual relationship brings changes in reading and understanding.‍

Working predominantly from your own photographs and using acrylic paint on paper, Nick will encourage you to explore composition, colour, material handling and the role of tonality in creating light and mood.  During the course you will also be able to enjoy twice daily slideshows devised by Nick that will explore the work of historical and contemporary artists including works by  Casper David Friedrich, Andrew Wyeth, Cecily Brown, Anna Bjerger and Hurvin Anderson.

"I just wanted to thank you so much for such a good course. I learned so much and you were so generous sharing about your own work too.  It has made me think, inspired me and opened my head up to new things and approaches to painting.” Stony Parsons, Landscape Drawing and Painting with Nick Bodimeade

If you enjoy Nick’s approach to teaching – and who doesn’t? - then take a look at the following courses he will be delivering at the Seawhite studio in the coming months:

FOLLOWING THE THREAD - DRAWING FROM TEXTILES

with Nick Bodimeade

8 -10 October (Wed - Fri) | £300

This course offers three days of looking at and drawing from a collection of textiles from around the world.  Working at a variety of different scales with a broad range of drawing materials you will discover that the usual distinctions between abstraction and representation will happily dissolve.

 LANDSCAPE & ABSTRACTION

with Nick Bodimeade

1 - 3  December (Mon - Wed) | £300

What is landscape? Many artists seek to exploit the parallels that exist between the processes of landscape and those of painting.  This course explores landscape painting’s relationship to process based abstraction.  Colour, composition, layering and visual atmosphere will all play their part. The aim being to create visual equivalents for landscape rather than straight forward representations.
