Dear
With only a few places remaining for Emily’s Paint Fit (live online) and Autumn Trees (face-to-face and on-location with Emily and Katie) this newsletter is your last call to sign up and ignite your creative spirit this autumn! Packed with ideas, inspiration and new approaches these courses have the potential to keep your creative fires burning all through winter.
We’ve described these courses in detail in recent newsletters, so in this one we’re offering something different. With Autumn trees, we’ve outlined the benefits to signing up for the course in five short points. With Paint Fit, Emily has shared her thoughts and reflections on recent paintings that will inform her practice during the two weeks of the course. Paint Fit students always mention how helpful and grateful they are to Emily for sharing her process and thoughts, so this newsletter gives a little taste of what you can expect if you join her.
You can read the previous newsletters about both courses here:

Paint Fit is an online course that invites participants to make a two-week commitment to painting daily. Each morning they join Emily for a 1-hour tutorial in which she suggests exercises, gives demonstrations and shares painting tips that get everyone fired up and ready to spend time painting independently in their home studios. It’s a chance to get to the heart of what matters in your painting and by the by the end of the two weeks we find that everyone feels like they have made significant progress with their work, and has the motivation to keep going independently. The vibrant and supportive online community that is fostered both during and beyond the confines of the course (via a private Facebook group) is a key part of what makes this experience so successful. It’s heartening to see artists share their wins, push each other on and banish that sense of isolation and lethargy all artists sometimes feel when painting alone.

Image: Study in response to large Woodland Weave painting, Emily Ball, August 2024
"I have a growing collection of large paintings, drawings and studies exploring the theme of what being in the woods near my childhood home feels like. This subject has been a trigger and metaphor to explore more personal themes of what it is like to be in my skin, loss, beauty that bites and connections to Nature. Over the summer, although I was continuing to work with this theme, the paintings felt complicated and overwhelming at times, which made me step back and reconsider. I knew that I needed to start asking different questions of myself and the work. How do I feel about the subject at this moment in time, and what do the paintings need going forward?"

"At the beginning of September I took my annual trip to Portugal to teach and make my own work. It was a space to reflect. I wanted to be calm, open, present. I took myself off to a place on the hill that I knew well and started to make very small, glowing studies."

"I felt the need to be clearer, simpler and make the work more intense. I really loved these little studies. So I brought them home and have continued to make little paintings on canvas, pushing further into the shimmering, glowing qualities to see where they take me."

"During Paint Fit I am going to use the space and time to reconnect with my Woodland work and see how my approach to these tiny Portugal paintings may have changed my awareness and focus. The need to step back, review and re-invent is nothing new. It happens periodically as my paintings progress, as life throws new things in my path and as I change. Growing, expanding, shedding the unnecessary, being more selective and tapping into our sensibilities is the creative journey. Finding out as we work;having a conversation with the painting, the subject and ourselves as the work grows and changes."

"As I lead everyone during Paint Fit it is my intention to create a calm, focused space for everyone so that we can become open, playful, articulate and discerning. I will demonstrate practical skills, offer selected thoughts and push into avenues of exploration that could help the work develop. Recognising the potential in the work that we have already done, and finding ways to intensify and celebrate what it means to us. These 2 weeks will be productive, supportive and my ambition is to help set everyone up to be able to work by themselves with more purpose and confidence going forward in the months to come."

5 reasons to sign up for Autumn Trees

1. Celebrating autumn through paint! What a total joy; the structural forms of trees and foliage, the riotous colours of flaming leaves set against a bruised sky, the feel of crisp leaves and moss-soft grass, the sweet smell of the woodland’s leaf carpet mixed with pine needles. The experience is heady and immersive - the course offers you the chance to experience and describe the wonders of autumn through drawing and painting.

2. An inspirational setting. The location for Autumn Trees is Nymans Gardens – a National Trust property just 15 minutes drive from the studio. It’s a wonderful location for the course with hidden corners, tree-lined avenues, sweeping views across the Sussex weald and bordered by an ancient oak and beech woodland, home to cascades, sandstone outcrops, and a large variety of plants and wildlife. |

3. Learn to make ‘good’ studies on location. Accompanied by Emily and Katie you will create dynamic and exciting studies using exercises and processes to help you engage all the senses and visually describe the experience of being out in nature in autumn. |

4. The teaching double-act of Emily and Katie. There’s nothing quite like it! They’ve been team-teaching landscape-based courses for years and absolutely love it – as do the students. They both are generous and perceptive in responding to student’s painting needs and generously share their painting knowledge and expertise – which amounts to 50+ years of (collective) painting experience! |

5. Develop your personalised language of paint. The aim of this course is to give students the tools and courage to transform on-location studies into confident painting back in the studio. Emily and Katie will help students discover and develop their own language of paint – a visual poetry of marks, colours and motifs that visually articulate each person’s unique experience of being out in nature. |
