“When I paint my ambition is never to just capture the view that I see. Equally important is my movement,  my breath,  the sounds around me, the scents, the intangible, invisible qualities of nature. I have to invent marks and colours for them so that I can combine them with observation, to find images that are visual poetry.”  ~

Dear  ‍

Can you feel it?  There’s a sharpness to the morning air, the  blackberries on the vine are over-ripe, the leaves are subtly changing hue.  Autumn is coming and it’s a wonderful time of year to be an artist! The majestic shapes of  trees illuminate the landscape; often framed with a slate grey or sharp, clear, pale blue sky. The light is softer and the colours mellow and rich.  This November Emily and Katie invite you to head out into the landscape with them to celebrate and savour all that this season offers.

“At this time of year I paint with my eyes,  celebrating nature’s rich tapestry endlessly unfolding…finding my path in the woods, immersed in the canopy, all senses alert to the changing season. Leaves fall and rot underfoot. Mushrooms bloom. Sound and smell are heightened by the dampness in the air. And once again the colour. Colour at my finger tips. Colour under my skin. This is what I feel and more, when I think about painting Autumn Trees.” ~ Katie Sollohub

Autumn Trees is a hugely enjoyable five-day course that not only serves to raise your confidence in working outside on location, but also helps you develop your personal language of paint back in the studio.  It’s one of the highlights in the Seawhite Studio programme.

Autumn Trees is team taught by Emily and Katie, something which they love to do.  Both are generous and perceptive in responding to student’s work and generously share  their painting knowledge and expertise.  Anyone who has joined them when they teach together knows how beneficial it can be – you really are getting two-for-one when they are together!

“I loved your teaching, the way you bounced off each other giving so many ideas and processes to continue with and think about. “ ~ Caroline, course participant 2022

Day  1 & 2‍: on location at Nymans Gardens

The Course starts with two days at Nymans Gardens in Handcross, just 15 minutes from the Seawhite Studio. This National Trust property is characterised by beautiful and intimate gardens, hidden corners, tree-lined avenues, sweeping views across the Sussex Weald and bordered by an ancient oak and beech woodland.‍

Capturing the exquisite beauty of trees in Autumn is an enduringly attractive subject, but  on your own landscape painting can feel like hard work: it is difficult sometimes to motivate yourself to head out with all your kit and you can feel self-conscious painting outdoors by yourself.  With this course, Emily and Katie will accompany you into the landscape for two days, setting the pace (and banishing lethargy!) with motivating and stretching exercises that will encourage you to make rich, evocative studies. This work on location will be about capturing the colour, structure and developing a language of marks and gestures.  They will guide you through processes and tasks that will help you ‘be’ in the space; becoming immersed in the sounds, smells and tactile qualities of nature in Autumn.

“I feel  that for me you have opened up inspiration, excitement and a renewed love of painting – which on one’s own can often feel like a brick wall.  I gained so much from the Meditations, which were a fantastic way to start each day… I also feel a new connection with the actual earth, with sounds outdoors, and stillness surrounded by nature.” ~ Binnie, course participant in 2022

Days 3 - 5 : at the Seawhite Studio

For the final three days the group will be based in the Seawhite Studio, where Emily and Katie will support you in developing your personalised language of paint – a  visual poetry of marks, colours and motifs that articulate each person’s unique experience of being out in nature.  They have devised a supportive and packed programme of exciting exercises  for these studio  days that will equip you with the tools and give you the confidence to move from dynamic studies to the creation of vibrant personal paintings.‍

“Your course has provided me with exactly what I was looking for - a more involved and productive process where I can pick and choose the elements that I love, try without fear and push the studies as hard as I like. I am profoundly grateful.” ~ Zoe Taylor, course participant 2022

“I am aware of the fact that this is all a cycle of change that it is a much bigger force that I can merely reflect a tiny glimpse of in my painting. All I can do with my marks, colours, scraping, excavating and layers of sensations is try and give form to my experience of being there.” Emily Ball
