Dear  ‍ ‍

Over the last few weeks the Seawhite Studio has played host to many wonderful courses. In this newsletter we wanted to share these courses with you and hear from both tutors and students alike about what made them successful, enjoyable and productive.  The feedback we have received from students attending recent courses has been overwhelmingly positive and reaffirms our belief that our courses are relevant, impactful and represent a genuine investment in your creative practice.  Where possible, we have included students’ Instagram handle and would encourage you to check out their feeds to see more of the work they produced during the course and beyond.

As well as being reflective, we hope this newsletter inspires you to join us at the studio in the future.  To that end, we have included details of future courses which continue the themes started in these highlighted courses.

Hoping we can welcome you to the studio soon!

Tutor Reflections

“Spending a week in the Seawhite Studio with a group of other artists is both daunting and exhilarating! It can feel intimidating working in front of others, but being together really does propel the work forward. There is a kind of joint accountability and a studio dynamic which takes over, and which enables you to work beyond your perceived limitations. It is a liberating and joyous experience!” ~ Simon Carter

“It was a great week.  Simon is so unpretentious and approachable.  Suddenly there was a freedom to paint how I want and not how I think I should. I’ve revisited my process , and plan to re organise my studio space . So much fell into place. The only way I can explain it, I finally feel like I’m painting.  The Seawhite Studio was  a great place to explore my practice.” ~ Emma Puches-York @fentastic_creations

Floribunda with Emily Ball

Tutor Reflections

“Spring this year has been so welcomed and needed. The cool, wet conditions that we have been having has meant that many plants are lush and so full of beautiful blooms this year. The display of flowers we created was abundant and varied and all the students really appreciated the rich visual display. On both courses everyone produced work that really pushed into how the versatility and physicality of paint can create an equivalent to the sumptuous, vibrant complexity of plants and flowers. There was an atmosphere of excitement, focus and intensity as we made work that was a homage to the wondrousness of flowers.” ~ Emily Ball

“4 wonderful flower-filled days spent with Emily Ball at the Seawhite Studio . Emily is a wonderful atist , teacher and person , and I’ve learnt so much from her over this past week…Thinking about words , how they make you see the work and the colour differently, being truly present and noticing what you like and what draws you in, and then building on what you’ve learnt in order to…..paint!

~ Jane McClelland

Tutor Reflections

“The Creative Painting Space is a course I always enjoy teaching. The shared space and support for each other works is so welcomed. It is exciting to see the range of work that the artists bring to the studio to develop and then the renewed energy, excitement and ideas that they leave with makes it so worthwhile for everyone.

Simply Still Life with Katie Sollohub‍

Images: Studio set up during Simply Still Life‍

Tutor Reflections

“Simply still life was a joy to teach. It’s there in the title - it is about being simply present to what is there - the humble objects of everyday. Still life can represent a microcosm of the world, and as such is an excellent place to practice painting - dealing with things and the space they occupy, playing with colour, experimenting with composition. Real breakthroughs were made by participants over the course of the 4 days, including some radical shifts on the last day - proving that ‘A painting is never finished it just stops in interesting places’ (Paul Gardner).  I am sure participants went home armed with tools for continuing with their own work at home, whether it be still life or landscape, the same principles apply. Colour, light, planes of space, movement, direction, changes and surprises… a world at your fingertips. Paint is a magical thing.” ~ Katie Sollohub‍

Student Feedback

“The course ticked all my boxes!! Katie gave us lots of guided approaches, but also loads of freedom, she created an atmosphere of huge possibilities and potential. I loved all the options and approaches and the whole experience made me feel more able to achieve what I want from my work in the future. I enjoyed every day.  I feel clearer about what I’m doing.” ~ Debbie Moran

Drawing & Painting the Landscape from Photographic Sources with Nick Bodimeade

Image: Studio set up, Drawing & Painting the Landscape from Photographic Sources

Tutor Reflections

“Great bunch of artists attending the course. Masses of work produced where the emphasis was on experiment and development over finish and resolution. Most importantly it was about finding an individual painterly language that made springboard-like use of the photographic image rather than being constrained by it. Plenty of evidence of that seen and appreciated at the end of course crit. Lovely work!” ~ Nick Bodimeade

Student Feedback

“I liked Nick’s slide shows and talks at the start of every day and the clear directions for the work we were going on to do.  The impact on my own work is very exciting as I feel encouraged to work more broadly and expressively.  Nick has the gift of being able to tutor students with a range of experience and abilities and draw out their best.” ~Krysia Irvine @krysiadrury.irvine

“Working in the Seawhites studio there is a great atmosphere where we are all supportive of one another and I have come away with a completely fresh approach to landscape painting.”
