Katie Sollohub

Profile

I am a Sussex based artist, interested in documenting and recording the places I live and work in through drawings, paintings, performance, photography and poetry.

My work explores the narrative components surrounding objects, memories, interior and exterior spaces, brought to life with spectacular use of colour and detail. I make a point of keeping a regular practice, recording the everyday, from my daughter sleeping, to the things on the kitchen table. Making the ordinary extraordinary.

Biography

In 2014 Katie was awarded a Arts Council England grant to fund her year long residence at JMW Turner’s House in Twickenham, which was later restored and opened to the public in 2017. “Being a part of this historic project has been a great privilege and an inspiration for me. It has allowed me to really develop my relationship to place and architecture, and has nurtured a fascination with the area I hope will be long lasting.”

Since then she has maintained connections to the house, as well as other historic homes in the area, including Alexander Pope’s Grotto, Normansfield Theatre, and Strawberry Hill House. More recently she has been invited to make new work in response to West Horsley Place, another heritage house in need of restoration; she’s very excited to be involved in the early stages of what promises to be a very interesting project.

As her own work with interiors continues, her reputation as a teacher is spreading far and wide, taking her to studios in Yorkshire, Italy, and West Dean College in 2019 as well as her work here at Emily Ball at Seawhite. Katie is an inspirational teacher, using her own experiences and processes to help motivate others. She aims to live life as a Creative Journey, and generously takes others along for the ride.
