Dear Visitor

The start of the year is a good time to reflect on how things are going and to make plans on where we are heading next.  We’re in the process of redesigning our website and it’s given us a chance to really think about what we offer at Seawhite Studio.  The pandemic necessitated the leap into online learning, but two years on we’re looking forward to once again building up our face-to-face courses at our studio.

What we offer now is a broad range of courses that suit different lifestyles and schedules,  and are accessible to people regardless of location and time zones.  So, in this newsletter, we wanted to focus on three new courses that spotlight the different course formats that make up our programme:

FACE-TO-FACE COURSES at our huge studio in Partridge Green.  We’re so happy to be see the studio buzzing with creativity and purpose once again, and we’re even more excited to welcome Simon Carter back to the studio for his in-person short-course A HANDFUL OF OBJECTS.

PRE-RECORDED ONLINE COURSES.  Any time, any where.  These downloadable course offer an adrenalin shot of creativity for your practice that fits in with your schedule.  Once downloaded you have access to the course content for as long as you want.  In this newsletter, we’re focusing on  Joe Packer’s brilliant new course ORGANIC STRUCTURES – SPATIAL EXPERIMENTS IN COLLAGE.

LIVE ONLINE COURSES.  Join us -  and like minded artists -  for live-streamed demonstrations and tutorials with our wonderful tutors.  Continue to develop your work offline before meeting back online the next day.  With daily feedback from the comfort of your own studio, this is a great half-way house between independent online learning and in-person teaching at the studio.  Find out what’s new with Emily Ball’s FLORIBUNDA LIVE ONLINE in this newsletter.

FACE-TO-FACE AT THE SEAWHITE STUDIO

A Handful of Objects | with Simon Carter | 25-27 April 2022 | £300

A Handful of Objects is a three day studio-based course led by Simon Carter, looking at how you can create energetic and inventive compositions based around objects and activity in the studio. Each student will bring a group of favourite objects with them: two man-made things, two natural things, two patterned things and reproductions of two favourite paintings.

“We will start with quick, direct painting, looking at how paint can describe familiar objects yet still be understood purely as paint.  Working with acrylic paint on paper, we will build an image by painting, collaging, glueing different components together, considering what wild and disruptive things we do can do to create a painting.   Ultimately, we will be creating big compositions based on still life but with the lyricism and breadth of landscape.  We will look at what it is to ‘finish’ and how we think about and assess our work.” ~ Simon Carter

Simon  Carter has run numerous courses with us over the years -  both live-streamed  from his studio and in person at the Seawhite Studio.  He  has deservedly gained a reputation as a thoughtful tutor who generously shares his knowledge and passion about drawing and painting with his students.  This, combined with the  exciting demonstrations he delivers,  encourages students to be more fearless in their approach and more confident in their ability to change, edit, assess and develop their work.

PRE-RECORDED ONLINE COURSE

Organic Structures- Spatial Experiments in Collage | with Joe Packer |£130

Image: Joe Packer, Organic Structures, still from film made by Noah Carter

ORGANIC STRUCTURES is a course that experiments with close up observation, collage, spatial arrangement of forms, and layering and glazing methods. Over three days  you will make a minimum of 2 large scale collages informed by close-up observational drawings and paintings of either house plants or some gathered flora and fauna or foliage in the garden. By focusing on the intimate details, shapes, form and space , these images will then inform the scaling-up process; becoming component-ingredients for larger works, constructed through collage making processes and incorporating painting and glazing techniques. The goal will not be to produce ‘finished works’ but rather to think about new approaches to making images that artists can then take back into their own practice.

“I hope that by the end of the course you will have gained an understanding of how a piece of work can obtain its own autonomy or internal reasons for its existence, by building up a ‘history’ through intuitive making processes. Becoming a self- contained thing that is not reliant on being a naturalistic representation or ‘depiction’ in a literal sense.”~ Joe Packer

We consider ourselves very fortunate to have Joe Packer on our team of tutors at the Seawhite Studio.  His approach to painting offers students an exciting new perspective on constructing an image, with opportunities to experiment with new techniques.  Joe’s own work is stunning and well-worth checking out. His work reveals a connection with nature and features layered, glowing colours and exquisite mark making. His evocative landscapes are lush and richly layered, and have rightly gained him critical acclaim.

LIVE ONLINE COURSE

FLORIBUNDA – COLOUR & GESTURE | LIVE ONLINE | WITH EMILY BALL | 20-22 APRIL 2022, 2-4pm each day (UK TIME) | £150.

“How do you navigate and describe the chaos and jungle of leaves and petals? How do you attempt to capture the elegance, fragility and dance of individual stems and flowers? This is what we explore in our Floribunda courses.” (Emily Ball)

FLORIBUNDA is one of our most popular courses and we can understand why.  The colours and sculptural forms of flora and fauna have long captivated artists, and when this is combined with Emily’s inspiring and engaging teaching approach, it makes for a winning combination and a fantastic course.

Being based in the UK means that many of our live-online courses aren’t as accessible as we would like to artists in different time-zones.  The joy of having an ever-expanding online programme is that we have been able to grow our international audience: we love feeling connected to a global community of artists. So for this FLORIBUNDA LIVE ONLINE course we are holding the live-streamed Zoom meeting at a later time. By starting at 2pm UK time, we hope that more of our American Friends on the East coast can join us (9am) and maybe even some keen beans on the West coast  too (6am!).  The change in start time might also suit some of our European students whose daily commitments mean that logging on in the afternoon/evening fits in with their daily schedules better.

The Focus for this Floribunda course is finding a language for paintings through colour and gesture. Working on a series of between 6 – 9 small paintings over 3 days,  students will celebrate the colour, the ordered chaos, the scent and the joy of the subject. Gathering armfuls of colours and marks from the inspiration of the flowers to work with students will then compose them by layering, selecting, editing, simplifying and inventing. The paintings will be an exploration into how to capture the life, light, delicacy and poetry of the subject. In the end the paintings themselves will become the subject.

Each day starts with a two-hour live demonstrations and group exercises. Each Zoom meeting is recorded by Emily and a link will be emailed to students so that they can watch the workshop again in their own time.  Students are expected to work independently “offline” to continue the work begun in the class and develop it further.  At the end of each day students will be encouraged to email Emily 2 photos of the work they have done that day. These are shared on an online gallery for the whole group to see and  gives Emily the opportunity to look at the work and tailor the workshop to every ones needs. Emily provides written feedback at the end of the course to give you ideas for how to develop the strengths in the work.   There is also a Facebook group page created for students on this course. You can add photos of your work here and give each other feedback.
