Dear Visitor

Already halfway through January – 2022 seems to have started at lightening speed!  We’d like to take this opportunity to wish you all good health and creative adventures in 2022.

We’ve got lots of wonderful courses lined up for the year ahead.  Some are still in development or are awaiting warmer days, but the two we are focusing on in this newsletter are open for bookings, are coming up in the next couple of months and are guaranteed to get your creative mojo working!  First up, we have MAGICAL SPACES, a new Face-to-Face drawing course from Katie Sollohub. In her inimitable style, Katie will encourage you to to take a fresh perspective on drawing: think playful, big and off-the-wall (literally).

At the end of February, Emily is back with the PAINT FIT WINTER RETREAT which sees her challenge another group of artist to make a two-week daily commitment to their art practice, joining her for online demonstrations, pep-talks and inspiration.  In this newsletter, Emily reflects on the huge benefits of this course and we also hear from happy punter Liz Ackerley on what she enjoyed about becoming PAINT FIT.

Finally, we also have details on competitions and exclusive discounts for students of the Seawhite Studio: it maybe cold outside, but it’s hot hot hot in the studio!

MAGICAL SPACES | FACE-TO-FACE AT The SEAWHITE STUDIO | WITH KATIE SOLLOHUB | 7-8 March 2022 | £225

"It is my firm belief that, through drawing you see the world better; you notice the small details, the beauty, the repetitions, the colours, the rhythms. You give yourself time, to pause, breathe, think, reflect, feel. And it feels good!" ~ Katie Sollohub

Katie Sollohub has long been championing the many possibilities that drawing can offer artists.  Her passion and belief in drawing is abundant in her own work: her widely acclaimed roaming residencies projects have produced stunning drawings with fresh perspectives on the interiors of historic houses.  In 2020 she received the prestigious accolade of winning first prize in the Derwent Drawing Prize for her drawing Blue Bedchamber (Strawberry Hill House).  You can find out more about Katie’s work by visiting her website, or her Instagram feed.

"I went on one of Katie's courses last year and absolutely loved it. I admire her hugely as an artist and teacher. " ~ Emily Ball

Here at the Seawhite Studio, Katie has gained a reputation  for delivering innovative and experimental drawing courses. Her approach is calm, clear and meditative. She is brilliant at creating processes that lead students into making work without angst and anticipation of the outcome. By encouraging students to explore new approaches to drawing – new materials, new processes, new exercises –  Katie’s courses help artists (re)discover how vital drawing is, how rigorous and dynamic it can be, and what a joyfully liberating activity it is to do!

MAGICAL SPACES is a brand new Face-to-Face course that will have you deconstructing the process of drawing; creating your own ‘still life’ installation in the studio space using everyday studio objects, cardboard, black and white paint, paper, ink, string and drawing materials.

"This is a workshop where participants can expect to have a bit of fun. Think of it like den making! Using the studio to create a den where anything can happen. Creating our own magical space. Build it, draw it, extend it, climb into it, spotlight it, create shadows, cut holes to peer through. I think we all need a space like this." ~Katie Sollohub

As you start to work on and with the 3-dimensional space, you will begin extending lines and marks onto large drawings on the studio walls and floor. You will spend 2 days immersed in this interactive experience, working on your own mini installation, or with the group on larger set ups, whilst simultaneously constructing large experimental drawings.  The experience will shift your perspective on drawing space, and lead to creative possibilities in your work elsewhere, whether drawing or painting.

The PAINT FIT challenge is for artists who need more courage and are feeling stuck, or tired. It is for artists who want their work to be more expressive and yet their courage falters when they are on their own in their studio.  Having delivered the PAINT FIT RETREAT twice already,  Emily has had time to reflect on what makes this course so special and why it appeals to so many artists:

“Recently when I have been working with artists I offer this quote from the painter Maggi Hambling;  ‘My mentor, the artist Arthur Lett-Haines, told me to make my work my best friend.’

All too often artists can feel despondent and lost before they have really properly begun the journey with a body of work. We are hard on ourselves and our work. What we sometimes lose sight of is the fact that we are having a conversation with our work. It is our best friend. The answers are in the paintings that we make; if only we would look, be generous and open. As soon as we impose an idea rather than notice and respond we feel disengaged. For my 2 week PAINT FIT course I am daily enabling artists - by giving structure and an increased sense of courage - to help them notice what matters in their process and work. I am helping them to be more articulate with their visual language and engaged with the content of their paintings."

"Each day I provide live demonstrations and exercises on my own work; sharing my 37 years of painting experience. Talking aloud about my painting process: the subtle decisions and trains-of-thought that motivate which brush I pick up; what colours I choose; where I place my marks. From the comfort and convenience of their own studios the artists then “follow” me, completing  the  exercises but focusing in on their own subject matter; concentrating on their practise as an artist and reflecting on what helps them to engage with their work. Importantly I also address what happens when painting is not going well. What do you do to turn work round and go forward again? Getting unstuck and re-inventing are things that I relish in my work.

So if you would like to develop a good habit of being in your studio regularly, be guided by an experienced teacher who  gives you daily encouragement with helpful exercises to help you focus on your work, then PAINT FIT could be just the course to get your creative practice off to a very positive start for 2022.” ~Emily Ball

We’ve received so many positive comments from artists who have joined Emily for PAINT FIT.  It's a course that really seems to resonate with many people, and definitely acts as a catalyst for future work.  Liz Ackerley was one of the artists that joined Emily for the last PAINT FIT in November.  Her fulsome feedback provides a great insight into what can be gained from accepting the PAINT FIT challenge. You can see more of Liz’s work by visiting her website or Instagram feed: @lizackerleyart

“The two weeks of PAINT FIT were EXACTLY what I needed.  I had spent the year developing a body of new work about the local landscapes for an exhibition in March 2022.  I knew that by November I would be flagging yet would need to keep my motivation up for my last group of work (about the panoramic view). Therefore I booked onto PAINT FIT as soon as it opened for enrolment"

"I really appreciated your rigorous approach.   It was so helpful to hear your dialogue and to unpick the work through studies and different techniques. As a result of the course, I feel my work is more confident.  The main change is that I feel much more at ease with going back and forth between studies and the paintings.  I feel more excited about the work and more able to go with the flow although it still very much looks like my work.  I think the idea of having a conversation with the painting really helps; I feel less alone with the work and more part of a team!

Through PAINT FIT, I was able to get to know my subject matter much  better and unravel some of what it means to me.  This wouldn’t have happened with out your excellent teaching.  The focus, the enthusiasm and the push, with a new inspiring task each day gave me momentum.  Because I was working on my own project, I felt a new sense of enthusiasm and urgency for it." ~ Liz Ackerley
