Dear Visitor

Summer is slipping away and Autumn is following gently on its heels.   To mark the changing of the seasons we are dedicating this newsletter to reflecting on those courses that really celebrate the changing qualities of landscape through the year.  We are already looking forward to Emily And  Katie’s wonderful AUTUMN TREES course in November, but before summer becomes a distant memory, we are pausing to look back on this year’s summer school WALKING THE LAND, with its focus on the themes of sound, movement and time.

All of the paintings that  accompany Emily’s reflections on the WALKING THE LAND course in this newsletter are for sale – unframed -  for £450 plus P&P.  You can see larger images of them on Emily’s website by clicking here.  If you would like to purchase one of the paintings  please email Emily at emily@emilyball.net

WALKING THE LAND – EMILY’S THOUGHTS ON THIS YEAR’S SUMMER SCHOOL

Throughout this year my walks have grown to become an integral and important part of my life. I don’t think I have every walked so much and I certainly have never explored the beautiful landscape around me more than I have this year. I am very lucky to live close to the South Downs. From my front door I can walk to the top of the Downs in about 30 minutes (if I keep up a good pace and get out of breath up the steep bits!).

In Spring and Summer my long, sure-footed stride and steady walking rhythm created a meditative state that sharpened my senses. I was more acutely aware of the sweet heavy scent of elderflower and the air laced with birdsong. The sometimes grey clouds hung heavy above the top of the hills and sometimes floated and sailed across the valley below. The crumbling white chalk was exposed and uneven on the path beneath my feet, but on the hill it was blanketed with cushioned green. On warm days, no wind, there was a heavy stillness full of wild flowers and the hum of insects. Inevitably these walks found their way into my paintings and our Summer School Painting Course at the studio.

When I paint my ambition is never to just capture the view that I see. Equally important is my movement,  my breath,  the sounds around me, the scents, the intangible, invisible qualities of nature. I have to invent marks and colours for them so that I can combine them with observation, to find images that are visual poetry.

For our Summer School Katie Sollohub and I created and filmed a selection of playful and practical drawing exercises for students to do on their daily walks. For a month leading up to the course we all made lots of studies, searching for a language to make our paintings from. On the course, both online and in person, we then selected the most inspiring of the studies and we led students through the process of beginning to create paintings from them.  I started paintings during the teaching and then after the course continued to develop them. To date I have made six small paintings on the theme of Walking the Land. This has become an ongoing project and it has made my  daily walks even more of a joy than before.

Autumn is a magical time of year. The light is softer and the colours mellow and rich. To celebrate and savour this change in the landscape, using drawing and painting, Katie and Emily will be running their online Autumn Trees course again. They have filmed on location at Sheffield Park in Sussex, demonstrating practical ways of making studies out in the landscape.   As a participating student on the course, you will be sent these films a month ahead of the course so that you can fully prepare at your own speed. Then at the start of November this online course really takes off!  Katie and Emily will be  live from the Seawhite Studio, where they will lead you through the process of using your studies to make rich and exciting paintings. Last year’s course received wonderful feedback: come and join us for this year’s course!

"I really enjoyed the Autumn Colour on line course. The ideas and videos we had as a starting point were fantastic and I loved having the time to sit, meditate and really focus on the colours, shapes and sounds all around me. I loved working from my own studio and having everything on hand. I was exhausted at the end of the week but on a high with how I felt about what I had produced." (Barbara Byars)

"You both explained quite clearly what the tasks were and your stream of consciousness was so helpful. The technology worked well too and as a live online course I don’t think it could be better." (Ghislaine Beeson)
