Emily Ball at Seawhite
Contemporary Drawing and Painting Courses
Season's Greetings
![]() Image: Still “From Sketchbook into Paint”, Emily in her studio (Paint Fit), Still from “The Geography of Paint” Dear Visitor The end of the year can often feel like things are winding down for winter, but not at the Seawhite Studio. We’re constantly adding to our online programme of courses which offer students – all over the world – the freedom and flexibility to join us for a “Seawhite experience” from their home studio”. This week the brilliant Noah Carter has been filming Artist Joe Packer as part of a new pre-recorded course that will be available in 2022. In the meantime, this newsletter is all about three new courses that you can book now! First up is Emily’s Winter PAINT FIT STUDIO RETREAT in February. This is a live-streamed course and offers you a wonderful way to give your painting practice a super-charged energy boost that will start your painting year off with bang. Then we have two new pre-recorded courses which you can download and immerse yourself in at a time that works for you. Simon Carter’s GEOGRAPHY OF PAINT is all about working from dynamic drawings to develop a free and experimental approach to the painting process. Katie Sollohub’s returns with a sketchbook based course - FROM SKETCHBOOK INTO PAINT - which encourages you to transform your sketchbook work into exciting paintings. We hope these courses resonate with many of you and that you feel inspired to join us painting and drawing with the Seawhite Studio in 2022. Thank you so much to all of the artists who have come on courses both in the studio and online this year. There is never a dull moment, or a slowing down, due to the inspiring work being made by so many wonderful people. It has been brilliant to have students back working in the studio since May of this year. I had so missed the in person exchanges between artists, the atmosphere in the room and being surrounded by other artists work as it evolves. The online teaching has also continued to be a joy. After 16 months of doing it we have now such a real sense of community and friendship that I don't think any of us thought would be possible at the beginning. As we get better and better at using the technology and working it into our lives the physical distance between us all over the world, as we work in our studios, seems to get smaller and smaller. Thank you also to everyone who reads these newsletters and follows us on social media. We love hearing from you and seeing what you are doing in your studios. So from all us at the Seawhite Studio: Emily Ball, Luke Stuart, Katie Sollohub, Nick Bodimeade, Simon Carter, Joe Packer, Angie Hunter and Jane Nash, we wish you a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful, creative New Year. |

PAINT FIT - WINTER RETREAT| EMILY BALL | LIVE-STREAMED ONLINE COURSE | FEBRUARY 21ST - 25TH & 28TH - MARCH 4TH 2022 (MONDAY - FRIDAY) 10AM - 11.15 AM EACH DAY | £250![]() Image: Jane Skingley “The course was exactly what I hoped for and more…I felt stuck in a rut, always starting paintings in the same way, making similar marks and using similar colours. [The course] was wonderful for pushing me outside my comfort zone, using new tools, colours and new ways of thinking about my work.” Jane Skingley The PAINT FIT challenge is for artists who need more courage and are feeling stuck, or tired. It is for artists who wants their work to be more expressive and yet their courage falters when they are on their own in their studio. ![]() Image: Emily ‘s studio set up during November’s Paint Fit Studio Retreat Emily does not provide the subject matter for this course so artists will need to have this already. To get the most out of this course you will need to have lots of studies and perhaps paintings that are already in progress to build and improvise from. Over 10 days in February and March this course will ask you to make a daily commitment to painting. With daily input from Emily as your Paint Fit Trainer, the course aims to instill a daily work ethic that will become an essential part of your painting routine. By the end of the 2 weeks you will have made a lot of work, got into a routine of being in your space and also be armed with some processes and strategies for continuing forward. ![]() Image: Carmen Renwick “I found the exercises stimulating and thought provoking. I always enjoy working in mixed media but now have the courage to examine new mark making and enjoy the sheer physicality of paint. I have even allowed myself to paint ’ugly’ pictures instead of striving for beauty all the time . Play is powerful and I will embrace it more in my life. I feel stronger now and my work is becoming more authentic and even exciting at times.” ~ Carmen Renwick For more information and to book your place, please click on the course title below:

THE GEOGRAPHY OF PAINT | WITH SIMON CARTER | PRE-RECORDED COURSE | £130 “THE GEOGRAPHY OF PAINT looks at what it is to put paint onto a surface in relation to things observed. We will look at varying ways to see sketchbook drawings made outdoors, and explore how to use them to generate paintings.” ~ Simon Carter ![]() Click on the image above to see a short promotional film about THE GEOGRPAHY OF PAINT (film credit: Noah Carter Studio) Simon is a generous tutor who provides exciting demonstrations as part of his short courses. Walking his own talk, he encourages students to appreciate how vital it is to change and edit paintings and inspires them to be confident in doing this. THE GEOGRPAHY OF PAINT is a three day practical painting course comprised of 3 instructive films, each 1 hour and 30 minutes long. It’s all about harnessing the life and spark so often found in initial drawings and exploring ways of transferring that verve into paintings made in the studio. Starting with your own drawings made from the landscape - maybe from your garden, a local park or street, the beach or from a favourite walk - Simon will demonstrate and guide you through different ways they can inspire a free and experimental approach to the painting process. By reference to his own studio practice, Simon will help you see how the ease and energy that is in drawing can be instructional in making painting. We will look at what is in the drawings, how we interpret them and ways to get things working in the studio. ![]() Image: Still from The Geography of Paint (Noah Carter) “Draw with vigour and purpose, and be bold. SKETCHBOOK INTO PAINT | KATIE SOLLOHUB | PRE-RECORDED ONLINE COURSE | £130![]() Image: Katie in the studio delivering “Sketchbook into Paint” (Luke Stuart) Have you ever wondered how to maintain the freshness and freedom of the work in your sketchbook when it comes to painting? If this sounds familiar, and you have sketchbooks full of exciting and experimental studies, just waiting to become inspire paintings, then this is the course for you! This exciting painting course is designed to follow on from Katie’s two inspirational sketchbook courses, COMING TO YOUR SENSES (landscape based) and MUSEUM OF THE SELF (on the subject of home). However, it could be used by anyone who has found themselves often pondering the same questions. The main aim of this course is to demonstrate how your sketchbook can and will inspire a series of paintings, by removing the boundary between the work we do in a sketchbook, and the ‘proper’ painting. Throughout this course you will be invited to revisit the processes that you may have only used in sketchbooks before, including mark making, pouring ink, accidental marks, layering, rubbing out, collaging over, allowing the image to emerge from ‘chaos’. There are 10 short films of varying lengths that guide you through this course. With practical exercises, helpful advice, mindful meditation and suggestions of how to resolve paintings, this course shows you how to get the very most out of yours sketchbooks for weeks, months, or even years!
