LATE SUmmer Floribunda
![]() Images: studio set up for Late Summer Floribunda at the Seawhite Studio (Emily Ball) Dear Visitor September is here, and with it the start of an Autumn term at the Seawhite Studio that heralds lots of exciting courses in-person at the studio and online. We’re looking forward to sharing news about these courses and are confident that you’ll find something in our autumn programme which you’ll want to sign up for! To kicks things off, here’s Emily reflecting on last week’s LATE SUMMER FLORIBUNDA course that she ran at the Seawhite studio: "After such a grey, wet, summer in the UK I was not sure what flowers would be available for my Late Summer Floribunda course last week. However, Nature is generous and abundant; providing us still with some glorious flowers and plants to inspire the course. Hydrangeas, Cardoons, Begonias, Dahlias, Salvias, Pelagoniums, Eucomis, to name a few, gave us a rich display to inspire the work. "We worked hard exploring ways to create paintings that were both a celebration of the plants but also a personal expression and investigation into the subject; searching out an image rather than copy the subject. The versatility of paint, the glowing properties of colours and the diversity of the language of marks we could use were layered and experimented with to make work that was daring, courageous and exciting. It was a great week working with dedicated and lovely people." ![]() Images: L – Emma Lindsay; R – Lindall Pearce (Late Summer Floribunda) “Thank you so much for another inspiring course. Your hard work at guiding and encouraging is so important to me. I learnt a great deal, enjoyed the group and appreciated the opportunity to focus.” ~ Jane Foot ![]() Image: Jane Foot (Late Summer Floribunda) |

JOIN US FOR A PRE-RECORDED FLORIBUNDA COURSE ![]() Images: stills from the Floribunda Pre-Recorded courses(Emily Ball) If you are inspired by the description of Late Summer Floribunda, why not sign up for one of our pre-recorded Floribunda courses? Once you’ve downloaded a pre-recorded course, you can access the course content as often as you like and for as long as you need. The other great thing about these courses is that you can do them at a time that suits you anywhere in the world. So if you’re in the UK, you can celebrate the wonderful September light that lights up a late-summer garden, or revel in the start of Spring and new blooms if you’re on the other side of the world! As flora and fauna are such appealing and heady subjects for many artists, we are delighted to offer two Floribunda courses as part of our pre-recorded programme. Each course offers an engaging and informative exploration into the subject, but each is subtly different in its approach – as Emily explains below: “The first Floribunda pre-recorded course is an introduction into moving away from making paintings that try to just copy what you think you see. On day one I demonstrate drawing processes that help the artist to unpack and explore the subject in a new way. For the rest of the course I show how you might begin paintings and apply the drawing processes in paint. I also demonstrate processes that enable the paintings to evolve in a way that keeps the energy, freshness and physicality that the flowers and plants inspire. “Floribunda 2 - Colour and Gesture is a development from the first and focuses totally on painting. There is more time devoted to pushing at the colour and gesture. Inevitably my love of finding inspiration from the tactile sensation of engaging with the subject is revisited but the process is slowed down and lingered over so that I can talk in more depth about the decisions that are made as you progress through a painting. Many students who have taken this course have also done the first one and found that they gained a lot of new inspiration and said that they loved it. I enjoyed it too and made five paintings during the week of teaching that felt rich and fresh. I hope that the feeling of exploration and play comes through in the filming.” ![]() Image: Emily Ball - Floribunda Spring Camelias, Oil Paint on Arches Oil Paper, 57cm x 38cm To find out more about these courses and to sign up for them, please click on the course titles below: FLORIBUNDA | PRE-RECORDED COURSE| WITH EMILY BALL | £120 FLORIBUNDA 2 – COLOUR AND GESTURE | PRE-RECORDED COURSE | WITH EMILY BALL | £130 ![]() |
