Yes, we know it’s summer, but we’re already excited to be thinking ahead to the wonderful new courses that will be taking pace in the autumn – both in-person at the studio and live-streamed online.
In this newsletter we wanted to share details of a course that forms part of our online offer for the autumn term.In December, Emily is once again running the hugely successful Drawing and Painting the Head – Self Portraits as a live-streamed course.
We also have news about the return of two tutorial-based courses that will be taking place at the Seawhite Studio in the Autumn. These are The Creative Painting Space and Painting Surgeries, both of which are ideal for artists who are immersed in their practice, but would benefit from the input of tutors and the support of working in the Seawhite studio space.
It’s wonderful to know that the Seawhite Studio will be open for students and tutors and that the space will be alive with painting and productivity. There’s nothing quite like walking into the studio when it’s quietly buzzing with industrious artists: the sound of tutors discussing work with each student; the smell of oil bars and paint; and the sight of studies, canvasses, sketchbooks on the walls, easels and tables. Oh how we have missed it!

The Creative Painting Space is for artists who want a kick-start that ensures that you are able to sustain their own independent practice. The sessions are focused on one-to-one tutorials with tutors who are committed to helping you improve your production, pace and help you to find ways to become unstuck. Rather than committing to whole term of sessions, you are able to select which of the three-day blocks you would like to attend. So you can pick and choose when to join depending on your schedule and when you need that artistic boost! In order to maintain social-distancing, the sessions for the Autumn term can each accommodate 9 students.

AUTUMN DATES FOR PAINTING SURGERIES with NICK BODIMEADE

The Painting Surgeries are 1-day sessions for artists who are have an existing independent practice. With one-to-one tutorials taking place in front of developing work, and lively discussions based around Nick Bodimeade’s thoroughly planned presentations at the start of the session, the Painting Surgeries offer practical strategies to move work forward within a rich community of dedicated artists. It can be a lonely business making paintings and the Painting Surgeries are a powerful support network for the students who attend them.
“I really enjoy having an input into the diverse range of work the students are engaged in. My role in these sessions is a bit like being a personal tutor or mentor.I provide practical advice on all aspects of being a painter from materials and processes to presentation and dealing with putting work in the public domain. I feel the most important thing is to help the individual make personal critical decisions about the development of their practice. Critical decision making can sound daunting but really it can be as simple as saying this is better than that, and then using that judgement to move forward.”~ Nick Bodimeade

DRAWING AND PAINTING THE HEAD | LIVE-STREAMED ONLINE COURSE | WITH EMILY BALL | 13-15 DECEMBER 2021 | £150
Image: film still from Drawing & Painting the Head (Emily Ball)
Drawing and painting self-portraits, looking at yourself in the mirror, is a grounding, challenging and invigorating experience. You are free to invent and take risks, as there is no one to offend or judge the likeness other than yourself. It is a chance to contemplate, scrutinise and explore how to capture more than just a likeness; to convey with feeling the mood of the gaze, to enjoy the sculptural qualities of the subject and materials.
During this 3-day course Emily will have a large mirror in her studio so that she can draw and paint herself, live on camera, to demonstrate and also work alongside you. She will lead you through processes that help you become confident at manipulating the materials. She will suggest ways of layering marks and shapes taken from observation to help you invent more expressive ways of making the features of the face. By the end of the 3 days you will have begun at least two paintings, and have lots of drawings and painted studies that will be full of good material for many subsequent paintings.
