Contemporary Drawing and Painting Courses
Experiments in Watercolour
with Simon Carter
![]() Image:Essex House, Simon Carter Dear Visitor We have another live-streamed online course with which to entice you! This course is a fantastic opportunity to work from nature (in the comfort of your home studio!) explore the exciting qualities of watercolour painting, and paint – virtually – alongside the wonderful Simon Carter. EXPERIMENTS IN WATERCOLOUR is a three day practical course led by Simon in March (23rd - 25th) . The course aims to have a fresh look at the medium of watercolour and how it might be used in an expressive, experimental and contemporary way. As we are more confined to our studios in the current situation students will be asked to gather a group of natural objects to construct a surrogate ‘landscape': “A contemporary of Thomas Gainsborough wrote, ‘He would make models - or rather thoughts - for landscape scenery on a little old-fashioned folding oak table... He would place cork or coal for his foregrounds; make middle grounds of sand or clay, bushes of mosses and lichens and set distant woods of broccoli.’ This approach seems like an interesting starting point for the course." ~ Simon Carter Click here to see some Gainsborough Landscapes that were inspired by this approach. |

Re-thinking the Possibilities of Watercolour Painting![]() “We will look at strategies for keeping the painting energetic and alive, approaching the watercolour with freedom and attack.” ~Simon Carter The course will not be about technique, but will seek to use watercolour in a bold and painterly manner. Each day will start with online demonstrations live –streamed from Simon’s studio. During the course, you will paint directly from your surrogate landscape, construct landscapes by tearing, cutting, collaging and overpainting, and build up to painting watercolour at scale; making large, multi-sheet watercolour. Students will then have their own studio time to immerse themselves in the process of painting, being encouraged to be bold and experimental in their approach. A gallery page on the website has been set up for students attending the course to post their work online. There will also be a Facebook group for those on the course. This will be a way of sharing experiences and gaining extra inspiration. It also gives Simon the opportunity to see the work as it progresses before giving feedback at the end of the course. ![]() Image: Still from Experiments in Watercolour (Noah Carter) To find out more and to book your place, please click on the course title below:

Simon Carter: Artist and Tutor![]() Image: Saltings, Simon Carter Simon has run numerous live-streamed courses both from his studio and at the Seawhite Studio. He is a generous and attentive tutor who provides exciting demonstrations as part of his short courses. He gently but successfully challenges and helps people to progress. Walking his own talk, he encourages students to appreciate how vital it is to change and edit paintings and inspires them to be confident in doing this. The experience of preparing and delivering online courses has been one that he has enjoyed, as he reflects here: "It has been a real pleasure to run workshops direct from my studio. It is demanding and quite exposing working live in front of the camera, but I feel I am learning and making discoveries alongside everyone else. It has made me think again about what it is I actually do in the studio, and then find strategies to enable others to open up and explore their practice.” Find out more about Simon’s work by following him on Instagram: @simoncarter11 Or, visit his website: www.simoncarterpaintings.co.uk |
