New online Courses tHAt Celebrate Colour!
Here is a revised version of the latest newsletter with updated links for our new pre-recorded courses. Please disregard the previous edition; apologies for any confusion.![]() Image: Colour on Colour study (Emily Ball); Study of Eve (Emily Ball); Still from Painting the Colour Theatre (Noah Carter) Dear Visitor November already! The Autumn programme at the Seawhite studio continues to be filled with glorious colour and exciting courses. We have been overwhelmed by the energy, commitment and enthusiasm that all our students have displayed when joining us for a course. One of the traits that makes the studio so rewarding for students and tutors alike is that it fosters a supportive community of artists that encourage and inspire one another (the importance of which cannot be overstated in these difficult times). With our growing library of online courses - both live-streamed and pre-recorded – our community is extending to studios all over the UK and around the world; something that we feel proud and grateful to be part of. Already this term we have run several live-streamed courses, including Emily’s Drawing and Painting the Clothed Figure (read Emily’s review of the course in this newsletter). Katie Sollohub’s Embodied Drawing and Simon Carter’s Experiments in Watercolour have proved so popular that we are running them again in the New Year – book early to avoid disappointment! In this newsletter, we are launching two new pre-recorded online courses: Colour on Colour with Emily and Painting the Colour Theatre with Nick Bodimeade. Both of these courses are available to download now. They are a great addition to our growing catalogue of pre-recorded courses which include Floribunda with Emily Ball, The Working Landscape with Simon Carter and soon-to-be-added Constructing a Landscape with Joe Packer. With fantastic tutors, stimulating subjects and an abundance of demonstrations, exercises and tips, we feel excited and confident that our online programme of courses offers inspiration and a real boost to your working practice. Nick has developed a wonderful three-day course in which students will make a minimum of 10 abstract paintings in response to a pair of evolving abstract still-lives constructed in modified and painted cardboard boxes. The Paintings and the Theaters will change in response to each other as well following their own development. Both the paintings and the Theaters will be photographed regularly in order to document change but also as an additional body of work. ![]() Image: still from Painting the Colour Theatre (Noah Carter) “We will work with a limited range of marks and forms - essentially stripes, blocks and blobs - in both the constructions and the paintings, Think of how Howard Hodgkin manages to create extraordinary evocations of space, place and human presence from similarly restricted means. "The main aim of the course is to establish an evolutionary and experimental working process. To this end we will work on at least eight of the ten paintings simultaneously, but only working on the least successful whilst holding onto the best until they have been superseded. This enables clearly understood progress to be made. If your worst paintings overtake what were previously your best you have clearly made progress.” ~ Nick Bodimeade For more information and to download the course, please click on the image below ![]() Image: still from Painting the Colour Theatre (Noah Carter) |

Review: Drawing & Painting the Clothed Figure![]() Image:development of a painting - work in Progress, Drawing & Painting the Clothed Figure (Emily Ball) Last week, 25 artists joined Emily for her 4-day online course Drawing and Painting the Clothed Figure. With a richly-textured backdrop of patterned fabrics, students worked (remotely) alongside Emily as she guided them through the process of drawing and then painting their sitter. For some students, the sitter was themselves, for others it was a family member or friend. For Emily it was her 16 year-old daughter Eve. Here are Emily’s thoughts on the course and of the experience of capturing Eve’s character in paint: "The images above show 3 stages of the beginning of a large painting, in response to my daughter Eve, that I began on Day 3 of the course. The painting is going to change again (many times) as I search to find an image that captures a quality of Eve that goes beyond just a likeness, to a feeling that connects me back to only a moment that a mother would know about her daughter; a look, an essence of her personality, something special and fleeting. This 4 day course was both a joy to teach but also stretching and demanding - in a very good way. Demonstrating by doing my own work on camera I led students through a process of drawing, searching, moving, selecting, re-inventing directly from the person seated in front of them, which in some cases was the artist themselves as the subject. This progressed to painting using the experience of making the drawings and embracing the expressive versatility of the paint. "The work produced by the students was inspiring and courageous and is still going. The course may have ended but the artists are continuing to develop the work inspired by the course. This shared experience was made all the more special by the fact that the models in our own studios were often family members and people we knew well. This gave everyone rare moments to look, cherish and celebrate our relationships with these people as we drew and painted them." ~ Emily Ball ![]() Images: Jane Grant; Jenny Hill Norton; Henri Mann “It was wonderful to have insight into how you work and how your thoughts were going; every single one of your marks was carefully considered and related to the rest….[I find it] difficult to slow down, But I am filled with determination to use what has been absorbed. I played back the recording each evening and I really think that helped to consolidate the learning.” ~ Jenny Hill Norton Click on the image below to see more work created by students participating in this course ![]() |
