Emily Ball at Seawhite
Contemporary Drawing and Painting Courses
for the love of painting...
At the Seawhite Studio, the love of painting runs through everything that we develop and offer as part of our programme of courses, workshops and residentials. Our programme changes and evolves, to continue to excite and inspire our artists and students and this week we are delighted to present 2 new courses!
The first we feature this week is an introduction to painting with our Beginners Painting Course encouraging a free and experimental way to handle paint for beginners and those returning to work with acrylics or oils. The second course, Still Life - A Personal Life History, gives students a special opportunity to develop work that is autobiographical through using personal objects.
NEW! Beginners Painting Course
with Katie Sollohub
This course, taught by Katie Sollohub, is a wonderful introduction to painting, suitable for students with little or no experience of handling paint. It is also an inspirational course for anyone returning to painting and may be feeling very rusty. Equally, it is ideal if you are wanting to change from acrylics to oils, or oils to acrylics, and would like guidance moving into a new medium.
This course will teach you how to handle paint in a free and experimental way, encouraging you to play, to love the material of paint and to let go of any inhibitions. Not so much a technical ‘how to’ course, but a hands on, informative, step by step introduction to the process of painting in your own way. You will be encouraged to continue practising the processes given in the weeks between each part of the course and to bring your work to get feedback on during the following sessions.
The dates and topics are as follows:
An Introduction to Paint. 10th & 11th December 2018
An Introduction to Still Life Painting. 14th & 15th January 2018
An Introduction to Landscape. 11th & 12th February 2019

NEW! Still Life - A Personal Life History
with Emily Ball and Katie Sollohub
Still Life 2. Katie Sollohub
This course and the work produced grows and unfolds over 3 terms. Inspired by the exhibition 'Matisse in his Studio' at the RA in 2017 and the Frida Kahlo exhibition at the V&A (June - November 2018) both showing the personal belongings that appear in their paintings, we invite students to bring their own objects to the studio.
The objects that we have in our home are often symbols of our own personal history - a souvenir, a family heirloom, a postcard, or simply an abandoned coffee mug....each object tells a story.
You will make a body of work (both drawings and paintings) from your objects paying special attention fabrics and objects with sumptuous colour, pattern, texture, as well as personal association. Using different approaches to get to know the subject (through touch, writing and memory as well as visually) we will explore the subject beyond the traditional still life.
The work produced will be autobiographical, a personal story, a self-portrait using objects that mean something to you, or that have metaphorical relevance to your life and loves. Meeting monthly means that Katie and Emily will ask you to do preparation work for each session. The work you do in your own time will be used to inspire paintings and drawings during the class. You will be encouraged to get into the routine of a daily practice, even if it is just 10 minutes drawing a day.
