Emily Ball at Seawhite
Contemporary Drawing and Painting Courses
This week we celebrate the exciting talent and inspiring work of Seawhite Studio artists and students.
We begin with Emily introducing our exciting new show, PRIME, which opens this Saturday the 16th September in the Atrium Gallery at Seawhite and exhibits the work of 4 talented and dedicated women artists who are either current or past students at the Seawhite Studio.
Emily has just returned from a wonderful week in Portugal with a group of inspiring artists and students and shares her reflections on the Painting from Nature course and its magical setting.
The Atrium Gallery, Emily Ball at Seawhite Studio,
Star Road, Partridge Green, RH13 8RY
16th Sepember 2017 - 16th February 2018
Prime is an exhibition of paintings by four women artists - Jacky Bellamy, Jane Cattlin, Philippa Paterson and Juliet Robertson. Each artist is at a point in their careers where they have truly found their own voice. Certainly all four artist’s work contains an element of autobiography – whether that is Jane’s design background, Philippa’s exploration of feminism, Jacky’s description of family relationships or Juliet’s observations of her life and surroundings - but it’s more than that.
This show is about standing on your own feet as an artist, away from the safety net of the tutors and regular classes to attend. Having said that, all are quick to highlight the essential role that Emily, the tutors and fellow students have played in developing their painting practice.
"It is true to say that many of the artists who come on courses at my studio are women. These women are already extraordinary in their achievements of bringing up their children and having a career alongside their commitment to their families.
What I find adds to this inspiration is the determination they all have to follow their passion for painting. It is a tough game trying to make paintings that are charged with as much vitality and content as these artists have done.
I have curated this show not only because I love their work but also to give inspiration to other artists. These women are far from winding down, taking it easy, taking up painting as a hobby....they are going for it, full throttle and are seriously good. So good in fact that each of them over the past few year have won a first prize at the NOA Exhibition. I love to see these artists flourishing and setting the bar so high".
Do join us at the open day on Saturday 16th September for tea, coffee and home made cakes. Catalogues of the show will be available to purchase. Your invitation is attached.
Painting from Nature in Portugal
"I am back home after 9 days in Portugal teaching a 'Painting from Nature' course. And, although it is nice to be home it was also sad to leave such a beautiful place and the fantastic group of people that I had the joy of working with. Blue skies, turquoise sea, bright moonlit evening walks, incredibly delicious food not to mention the hard work and great painting that was done too. And when all that loveliness got a bit too much you could always have a massage or reflexology to sooth you and help you to be ready for the next exciting day of painting, walking, eating, swimming, laughing and playing.
A big thank you to all the wonderful artists who came on the course. They had travelled from far and wide; Norway, Brussels, Spain, France, Manchester, Dorset and Ireland. I am full of admiration for the courage they brought to making their work. Everyone made big leaps forward with their paintings and supported and encouraged each other so generously.
Ros Hodges who runs the Natural Retreat was the best hostess you could ask for. She has worked hard over the past 15 years to create a beautiful home, garden and atmosphere that helps people to feel nurtured and relaxed".
