Dear Visitor
The final in-person Colour & Light in the Landscape course on the South Downs has just taken place, with Emily and Katie inviting another group of artists to join them on Truleigh Hill, high above Shoreham. |
|
|---|
Two days out in the landscape, exploring ways to make studies that are full of visual information, experimentation and sensory memory. The artists who attended now have armfuls of studies to take back to the studio — material they can use to create paintings that are dynamic, fresh and convey that same sense of being in a place. |

And this is where Colour & Light on the Downs: Development into Paintings comes in.
In October, Emily and Katie will be at the Seawhite Studio for three days, working with artists to unpack their landscape studies and use them as inspiration for new painted studies and finished paintings.
You don't have to have attended the in-person course at Truleigh Hill to join them. The October course is Part 2 of the Colour & Light in the Landscape journey, and you can also reach it by completing the pre-recorded Part 1 in your own studio. The two formats are interchangeable, so you can choose the route that suits you. |

Emily and Katie have spent many years painting in the landscape and encouraging others to do the same. Over time, they have developed a strong understanding of what is important in this process and have distilled it into two complementary courses that take you from being out in the landscape to developing paintings back in the studio.
Part 1 takes you outside and focuses on making studies. Part 2 takes you back into the studio, where those studies become the starting point for new painted studies and potentially, finished paintings. |

This three-day course is the in-person Part 2 of the Colour & Light in the Landscape journey.
It is suitable for artists who have attended one of Emily and Katie’s two-day Colour & Light courses on the South Downs in 2025 or 2026, or for anyone who has completed the pre-recorded Part 1 course.
The two formats are designed to be interchangeable, so you can make your landscape studies through the online Part 1 course and then bring them with you to the Seawhite Studio to develop them into paintings with Emily and Katie.
The freshness, freedom and immediacy of studies made in situ are qualities we often want to retain in sustained and finished paintings. But the studies are not there to be copied. They are there to be used as inspiration and triggers for new work.
The colours, marks, layers and memories in your studies become material to play and invent with. They will become your landscape — a place to walk through and explore. They will be reminders of the sensations, light, weather and feelings of being out on the hill. |

This course is about unpacking the content of those studies and using it to make new painted studies and work towards finished paintings.
Working with either acrylics or oils on canvas, board or paper, you will experiment with paint, tools and mark making to discover the language you need to make powerful and exciting paintings. |

Trying to convey the physical experience of being in the landscape is both challenging and enticing. You can endeavour to capture what you see, but there is always so much more: birdsong, a warm breeze on your skin, the buzz of insects, the verdant space surrounding you.
Perhaps it is the feeling of being grounded and held by the landscape as it rolls and folds. The scent of wildflowers at your feet. The contrast between the wild and the tamed. Who knows what will become the inspiration for your paintings? The reason for making the paintings is to find out. |

This course gives you the creative processes and practical instruction to build your confidence in going outside to your favourite location and making drawings and studies.
The aim is to move beyond simply copying the view and instead create work that is rich, painterly and experimental — studies full of the colour, light, sensations and memories of being in a place. |

These studies then become the starting point for Part 2, where you can take them back into the studio and explore their possibilities as paintings.
And if you would like to continue that journey in person, these studies can be brought with you to the Seawhite Studio for the three-day Colour & Light in the Landsacpe - Developement into Paintings course with Emily and Katie in October.

In Part 2, Emily and Katie show you how to unpack the information contained within the studies you made on location and use them to make new painted studies and work towards finished paintings. Filled with colour, marks, layers and memories — the studies contain rich material to experiment with, transform and develop into new paintings.
Across six films and nearly six hours of footage, Emily and Katie lead, demonstrate and share processes for exploring the possibilities within your studies and developing them into new work.
You can work with acrylics or oils on canvas, board or paper, experimenting with paint, tools and mark making to discover the language that will make your paintings powerful, exciting and uniquely your own. |
