This course takes its inspiration from being by the river and a key part of the experience will be walking through the surrounding meadows around Wittenham Clumps. It is a beautiful setting: the winding body of water through the landscape is flanked by banks of willows with their twisted, feathered branches. The watery reflections mirror the sky and mature trees, casting their shadows which ripple, flicker and flow through the reeds. It is a feast for the senses.
During the four days, Emily will encourage each student to be expressive and experimental with their approach to drawing and painting in response to Nature: getting the materials to give back a palpable equivalent to the feeling, the sounds, smells and movement; exploring processes and exercises that will enable you to be playful and inquisitive.
“I will share with you my firm belief in the importance of developing your own language of paint. The materials and tools themselves offer so many possibilities and qualities that can give back the tactile feelings of the place. On this course you will dilute, puddle, mop, bleed, blot, flow, pour, rub, edit, scribble and drag in order to find the image of the landscape and river.” ~Emily
Read on to find out how the course breaks down day by day, together with details about materials and practical information about what to bring – everything you need to feel excited to book and fully prepared to make the most of your time with Emily and the riverbank. |

“A study helps you find out what you love about the subject; selected and intensified. It also embraces the exciting qualities of the materials to help you take an imaginative leap into new ways of describing your sensations of the subject.” ~ Emily |

On day one, you will make lots of studies on location, using guided exercises. Emily will supply all the materials you will need for making your studies. Working very small and intensely you will make work that explores not only the beautiful things that you can see but also the sensations of sitting, surrounded by Nature. The drawings will become your dictionary of possibilities back in the studio for the rest of the course. |

Days Two - Four: In the Studio |
|
|---|
The remaining days of the course will be spent in the studio, working from your studies to inspire new paintings. Emily will encourage you to work on a series of same-size paintings and show a generosity when it comes to the paint itself. |

Emily’s intention is for each artist see the potential in their studies and guide them through selecting, arranging and intensifying the paintings. With the river being so close you will be invited to take short walks each day to refresh your connection to the place and to do some writing.
“I will also be bringing extra tools for everyone to enable gestural mark making such as; mops, trays, scrapers, sponges and rags. Warm up group exercises will foster play and give everyone courage to be physical and work without hesitation.” ~ Emily |

At the end of day four there will be a display of all of the work created, so that it can be collectively reviewed and reflected on.
At its heart, this course is about connecting with the landscape and with your own instinctive way of painting. Through close looking, playful studies and generous, physical painting, you’ll discover how to let the river, the meadows and the shifting weather shape your work. |
