“Standing on Truleigh Hill there are the most stunning views of the South Downs and the Adur Valley. You are held by the hill, grounded by the chalk beneath your feet, yet exhilarated by being up high, soaring and floating, feeling the air and wind on your face.” ~ Emily‍

 Dear  ‍Visitor

This week sees Emily and Katie deliver their new course Colour and Light on the South Downs.  This two-day landscape course proved so popular and  was fully booked so quickly, that we have decided to run it again at the end of the month.  So, if the warmer weather has re-awakened your love of nature and you feel a pull to be out in the landscape celebrating all it offers through drawing and painting, then this course is for you!

Working with Emily and Katie, and using Truleigh Centre as its base (a studio space right in the heart of the Downs), this two day course will give you the location, materials, inspiration and guidance to help you make exciting work.

With a short course working solely on location, there is no pressure to produce finished work.  The joy of this course is the chance to spend two whole days outdoors: really looking, being quiet, being still.  To spend time in the landscape in this way is a profound experience and one that stays with you and resonates deeply in the work you create back in the studio.

“For me personally, I love pushing, layering and rubbing colour in search of finding a visual connection to the vastness of the open space of the South Downs.  This course is about me and Katie sharing our love of colour and light, and helping you to find new ways of weaving colours together to create a beautiful sense of the scoop of the land and the way the light continually changes.” ~ Emily

COLOUR AND LIGHT ON THE DOWNS

A DRAWING COURSE

With Emily Ball and Katie Sollohub

26 – 27 June 2025 (Friday and Saturday)

On Location at Truleigh Hill Centre, West Sussex

£290 (all materials included)

“I loved being given exercises up on the hill, with everything I needed to make studies. Using materials I would not usually use was good. Emily suggested studies which made me excited, less overwhelmed … I trusted the process and felt immersed in my surroundings.” ~ Sandra Roche, Up on the Chalk Downs course participant, May 2025

Colour and Light on the Downs will be team-taught by Emily and Katie.  During the two days of the course, they will offer an exciting collection of processes to help each artist feel immersed in the experience and able to produce drawings that go beyond copying the view.   Their teaching double-act is  made up of conversations, demonstrations and insights into the process of making drawings and paintings, providing you with an injection of courage and creativity to make expressive new work.

“For this course I have carefully assembled a toolkit for each artist, based on what I have found to be the essential materials that help me make the most of working outdoors.  I have prepared papers and boards and chosen a delicious selection of colours in a variety of resistant materials: oil pigment sticks, oil pastels, chalk pastels, inks.  You’ll have everything that you need out on location – and there will even be flapjacks and tea to keep you going!“ ~ Emily

The course will use the Truleigh Centre as its base.  The centre is situated at the top of the Downs, nestled in the surrounding landscape. It is a fabulous recently converted barn space, and participants will have access to it throughout each day to shelter from the elements (if needed), look at the work created and take breaks. It is spacious and light, with all the facilities needed to be comfortable over the two days.  For more images of the location please visit Truleigh Centre’s Instagram Feed: @truleigh_centre‍

At the end of the two days, you will come away from the course feeling recharged, invigorated, enriched and more confident about how to capture the qualities of the landscape that are important to you. The drawings that you make could be the catalyst for future paintings. The two days with Emily and Katie are just the start!

I learned so much about making studies, considering choice of colours, how to mix colours using different tools, I’m looking forward to getting started - I will look at my notes as reminders.” ~ Sandra Roche, Up on the Chalk Downs course participant, May 2025
