Dear  ‍ ‍

 ‍

Working on location in the landscape is a wondrous thing.  It’s not just about capturing what you see, but finding a visual language to convey what you feel, how you are, and what you notice in that specific place: your movement; your breath; the sounds around you; the scents; the intangible, invisible qualities of nature.

If you love being in the landscape and are interested in making work that expressively captures the light, space, air and physicality of being on the South Downs then Colour and Light on the Downs is a course for you.

Working with Emily and Katie, and using the Trulieigh Centre as its base (a new studo space right in the heart of the Downs),  this two day course will give you the location, materials, inspiration and guidance to help you make exciting work that could inform and impact your practice for months to come.

COLOUR AND LIGHT ON THE DOWNS

A DRAWING COURSE

With Emily Ball and Katie Sollohub

5 – 6 June 2025 (Thursday and Friday)

On Location at Truleigh Hill Centre, West Sussex

£280 (all materials included)‍

“Standing on Truleigh Hill there are the most stunning views of the South Downs and the Adur Valley. You are held by the hill, grounded by the chalk beneath your feet, yet exhilarated by being up high, soaring and floating, feeling the air and wind on your face.” ~ Emily‍

Colour and Light on the Downs will be team-taught by Emily and Katie.  During the two days of the course, they will offer an exciting collection of processes to help each artist feel immersed in the experience and able to produce drawings that go beyond copying the view.   Their teaching double-act is  made up of conversations, demonstrations and insights into the process of making drawings and paintings, providing you with an injection of courage and creativity to make expressive new work.

“I feel a new connection with the actual earth, with sounds outdoors, and stillness surrounded by nature.   And you give excitement and fun to your subject, which I picked up on.  So it definitely has been most valuable.” ~ Binnie, Autumn Trees course participant 2024

The course will use the Truleigh Centre as its base.  The centre is situated at the top of the Downs, nestled in the surrounding landscape. It is a fabulous recently converted barn space, and participants will have access to it throughout each day to shelter from the elements (if needed), look at the work created and take breaks. It is spacious and light with all the facilities needed to be comfortable over the two days.  Participants will be required to bring a packed lunch, but drinks and home-made cakes and biscuits will be supplied!  For more images of the location please visit Truleigh Centre’s Instagram Feed: @truleigh_centre‍

At the end of the two days, you will come away from the course feeling recharged, invigorated, enriched and more confident about how to capture the qualities of the landscape that are important to you. The drawings that you make will be pieces of work in their own right and also the material and potential reference from which to make future paintings.
