PAINTING OBJECTS OF DESIRE

Two Day Still Life Course with Katie Solllohub

The way objects inhabit a space can be so evocative, suggesting something that has, or is about to happen, a half drunk cup, an open book. ‍

Dear  ‍

Join Katie at the Seawhite Studio at the beginning  of April for a two-day course working from Still Life.  This course is close to Katie’s heart, as her own practice takes much inspiration from objects in her everyday life. From drawing every item of clothing in her wardrobe, to her daily breakfasts and the objects she shares a house with – Katie’s interest in the power of objects to have meaning and provide artistic inspiration is endless.

And she’s not alone - Still Life has long been a familiar, rich and evocative subject for artists: wonderful examples can be found in the works of Matisse, Morandi, Soutine, Braque, Winifred Nicholson, Gwen John, Bonnard and Tricia Gillman.  Perhaps its perennial popularity can be partly attributed to the way this simple, manageable subject allows artists to play with much more universal themes: the play of light on forms, the effect of colour and pattern in a composition.

Painting Objects of Desire is a course bursting with ideas, exercises and inspiration.  It is guaranteed to get you looking at the objects in your home in a fresh new way (it’s not clutter or stuff; it’s inspiration!).

“The course was brilliant. The still life set ups were thoughtfully arranged, plenty of working space, excellent tutor and lots of individual attention and creative suggestions. I learnt loads and feel energised and enthused once again.” ~ Rosalind Young, Simply Still Life Course Participant, 2024‍

Painting Objects of Desire

With Katie Sollohub at the Seawhite Studio

3-4 April (Thursday - Friday), £200‍

Inspired by Matisse’s paintings of interiors, this course will see the Seawhite Studio transformed into a creative space filled with simple Still Life set ups, bringing a sense of domestic space, though props, objects, fabrics and furniture.   As part of immersing yourself in the theme of Still Life, Katie invites you to bring two or three objects that you love from your home. These will be incorporated into the studio Still Lives. ‍

You will make a series of colour studies and paintings from still life set-ups, paying special attention to fabrics and objects with sumptuous colour, pattern, texture. Different approaches will help you get to know the subject, and can then be applied to starting a painting, giving you several ways in. You will begin two or three paintings, and over the course of the two days at the studio have time to work on them to some kind of resolution.‍

“The course ticked all my boxes!! Katie gave us lots of guided approaches, but also loads of freedom, she created an atmosphere of huge possibilities and potential. I loved all the options and approaches and the whole experience made me feel more able to achieve what I want from my work in the future. For me the balance of gentle challenge, specific exercises ‘ways in’ and free styling was just right. I feel clearer about what I’m doing.

~ Debbie Moran, Simply Still Life, 2024

Whilst you do not need to do any preparation for this course, you might make some drawings, take photos, make notes, and think about artists whose work reflects on the intimacy of still lives in domestic spaces.

“Take some time to consider your relationship to the everyday spaces of your own home. A corner of the room, table, chair and lamp, a pile of magazines, kitchen utensils on work surfaces, a windowsill. These spaces are often ignored, or filled up with clutter, yet they are vital for our lives, moments of rest and contemplation, objects of necessity, places of activity.” ~ Katie Sollohub
