Dear  ‍ ‍

‍This February, we invite you to accompany Katie Sollohub to Danny House, a stunning Elizabethan Stately home, nestling at the foot of the South Downs.  Drawing Interiors at Danny House is a three-day course that will inspire you to create personal drawings - in situ and back at the studio - that capture your connection to the rich character and atmosphere of this beautiful home.

As an artist, Katie is interested in connections and interactions.  Through drawings, paintings, performance, photography and poetry, she records and documents the people she meets, the places she lives and works.  Her Roaming Residency commissions – which began in 2012 - have grown out of this practice, and have  taken her to various venues of historic importance including West Horsley Place, JMW Turner’s House in Twickenham and Danny House in Sussex:

"Danny House was the location of my first official Roaming Residency back in 2012, when I was commissioned to do 3 paintings by the owner Richard Burrows. I am very pleased to be able to go back there with other artists looking for fresh inspiration from a beautiful, lived in, historic interior, set in the foothills of the Downs with spectacular views." ~ Katie

DRAWING INTERIORS AT DANNY HOUSE

26-28 February 2025 (Wednesday – Friday), £300

“ For me, this is a return to my roots, back to the beginning, where it all began. My love of drawing and painting interior spaces really grew here, during my first artist residency back in 2012.” ~ Katie

Once lived in by Lloyd George (and the place in which the Armistice Treaty was signed!), Danny House is now home to Richard Burrows and his children, dogs and other animals, as well as being a prestigious retirement home.

“I first came across Katie’s work displayed at Seawhite of Brighton. I commissioned Katie to portray at Danny House various rooms including the Elizabethan Great Hall and my children’s bedroom. Katie stayed in residence for several months and inspired me, my family and many of the residents at Danny House with her unique work. Three of her paintings now adorn our family kitchen walls and help bring a freshness, colour and vibrancy to our life. Katie was a delight to have in our midst and she has become a friend and regular visitor.” ~ Richard Burrows, Danny House. West Sussex 2012

Day One: On Location at Danny House

  Wednesday 26th February

On day one in the house itself, you will be encouraged to make expressive and experimental studies on a small scale as you directly experience the complexity of the interior - a wonderful mix of everyday life, domestic space, and period features in the architecture and decor. You can spend the whole day there, with one-to-one guidance, and group discussions.

You will work small and fast in the house on the first day, working directly into an A5 sketchbook. Warm up exercises and short meditations will be offered to get you started. Drawing with all your senses, using pencils and coloured pastels, your drawings may be filled with sound, gesture, colour, pattern, details, space and light.

Day Two & Three: at the Seawhite Studio

Thursday 27th & Friday 28th February

Taking your studies, memories and sense of place back to the studio, you will have two more days to experiment, scaling up your marks and observations onto A1 and larger sheets and rolls of paper, letting the drawing grow and expand (like walking through the rooms of the house). Drawing and meditation exercises will be used to encourage the use of memory and writing to trigger new and remembered visual responses.

You will be encouraged to work on a large scale.  Think big, extend, add more paper, reach up to the roof beams.  Your studio drawings will be large and experimental, using charcoal and pastels as your main material, but anything goes.  Let this drawing become a meditation.

Combining courses

“For some of you this could be the start of a brand new project. By combining this with my prerecorded Museum of Self sketchbook course you would be set up for a wonderful new beginning!” ~ Katie

The Museum of Self is a 5 day course (comprised of a series of short films) that aims to give you a fresh way of looking at the everyday, and aims to encourage a regular practice on a small scale. All the work will be done in a sketchbook, with guided exercises and suggested self-study throughout. It can be seen as a way into a new subject, making you see your home life with new eyes, maybe inspiring more work to develop from it.

Commission Katie to draw your house‍

"Imagine seeing your home afresh, through the eyes of an artist. How would I see, and feel, the space you love and live in?

"If you would like your own bespoke work about your home, I can come and be your very own artist in residence, for anything from 2 days to 2 weeks, or even months. During this time, I will visit your house on a regular basis, and create a unique series of drawings and paintings about my experience there, which are yours to keep.” ~ Katie
