“I was looking for a course that offered this level of inspiration and instruction; I wanted to do a course that would stretch me and give me ideas into a new way of working and process…The course has now kick started me to look at different approaches to my art. I am also intending to use sections of from my collages to turn into paintings, so the course has enabled in me a find a new process to work.” ~ Jane Horton, previous participant on Joe’s Organic Structures course |

With the Natural world as your focus, Organic Structures invites you to hone your skills of close up observation and experiment with new collage and glazing methods in order to create large scale work.
During this three-day course you will make a minimum of 2 large scale collages informed by research and resource drawings and paintings, made prior to commencement of the large scale works. The course will start with making a succession of drawings from close up observation of either house plants or some gathered flora and fauna or foliage in the garden. These drawings are done to establish shapes and forms that can then be used in different stages as ingredients for making components for larger works, constructed through collage making processes and incorporating painting and glazing techniques.

"The goal will not be to produce ‘finished works’ but rather to think about new approaches to making images that artists can then take back into their own practice."
~ Joe Packer

"The atmosphere in the studio was very buzzy and friendly. It made me think of the Bake-Off tent - supportive but a feeling that you would 'up your game' whilst surrounded by talented and passionate people.”

These sessions are designed for artists who need encouragement and support to become more confident and self-motivated with their painting. Three consecutive days gives you the space and time to really see progress and to get absorbed in your work. Bring your current body of work with you and Nick will help you to unpack, research and create your own personal practice, in order to help your work evolve and for you to see the creative possibilities more clearly. As part of the course Nick also delivers talks showing the work of other artists. It’s a chance to explore new materials and tools to play with to refresh and add to what you are doing. Each student is given individual critiques and tuition as well as benefiting from working with a group of like- minded artists: it’s definitely time well spent and your painting will thank you for it!

“I think we all at whatever stage in our painting have something to contribute and can take our practice seriously. Painting should be exploratory, experimental, investigative, full of ‘what happens if’ questions and reflections on the results. Helping students explore their own sensibility and develop their personal visual voice is a key part of my practice as a teacher.”
~Nick Bodimeade

By stripping back painting to its most primary concerns and looking at the relationship between yourself and the materials, we can discover painting through its most tactile components , process, surface and touch. The three day course will encourage you to make a collection of expansive, large scale paintings and drawings, exploring rhythms in abstraction. Core to the course will be the importance of creating systems to underpin your work and developing the work through layering, mark making and expression.
Throughout the course there will be a number of different exercises to help develop the work. We will also be looking at the history of abstraction along with contemporary artists and their techniques, showing the expansive ways they are making paintings, through surfaces and processes. The course includes studio based activities and individual tutorials. This course is suitable for anyone with an interest in abstraction or would like to work on an ambitious scale.

"Danny House was the location of my first official Roaming Residency back in 2012, when I was commissioned to do 3 paintings by the owner Richard Burrows. I am very please to be able to go back there with other artists looking for fresh inspiration from a beautiful, lived in, historic interior, set in the foothills of the Downs with spectacular views." ~ Katie Sollohub |

On day one in the house itself, you will be encouraged to make expressive and experimental studies on a small scale as you directly experience the complexity of the interior - a wonderful mix of everyday life, domestic space, and period features in the architecture and decor. Drawing with all your senses, using pencils and coloured pastels, your drawings may be filled with sound, gesture, colour, pattern, details, space and light. We can spend the whole day there, with one to one guidance, and group discussions.
Taking these back to the studio, you will have 2 more days to experiment, scaling up your marks and observations onto A1 and larger sheets and rolls of paper, letting the drawing grow and expand (like walking through the rooms of the house). You will be encouraged to work on a large scale. Guided meditations and memory exercises will help reconnect you with the original experience, as well as your studies. Think big, extend, add more paper, reach up to the roof beams with charcoal on sticks. Let this drawing become a meditation.

“I don’t know that I can find the exact words to describe my admiration for your teaching and how you ran this course. You held us, prompted us, enabled and inspired. Your occasional exercises were brilliant. Really moving me forward.” ~ Anna Cady, participant on Katie’s Chichester Cathedral course
