Dear Visitor Nick Bodimeade has been an integral part of the tutor team at the Seawhite Studio for many years now. As his above comment suggests, he is a big believer in the value of working together: the discussions and conversations that happen during our courses can spark new ideas and breakthroughs. They are enriching and insightful, and the generosity of tutors like Nick in sharing their knowledge an expertise is returned in spades by the enthusiasm and engagement of artists attending our courses.
This is one of the many reasons we are pleased that Nick is once again delivering his brilliant short course Framing the View: a three-day course exploring the window, in and through drawing and painting. Last year’s inaugural course was a great success with positive feedback for the richness of this overlooked subject, as well as appreciation for Nick’s legendary talks and slideshows. He is great at introducing new artists, new artworks and new ideas, whilst simultaneously providing credible unpacked processes which can be explored in your own work. And the subject’s that Nick chooses to share in his courses are always ones that he is exploring in his own practice, so his observations are fresh and authentic. A framed hole in the wall offering views from the inside out and the outside in. The window has long been an immensely important subject; immediately locating the viewer spatially in relation to the subject, and engaging them in an exploration of their own feelings and recollections of similar experiences.
Framing the View is a three-day course exploring the Window, in and through drawing and painting.

In preparation for this course, you will be required to take photographs of windows from inside and out: rainy windows, dirty ones and ones with annoying reflected light. The window can include curtains, wall papers, brick work, and window ledge objects if there are any. Photos should be taken at different times and under different light conditions. ‘Bad’ photos are to be particularly prized as they are so often more useful for paintings. Over the three days of the course, these photographs will become the source material for drawings and paintings on paper as well as paintings on canvas. Each day and after lunch, Nick will provide slideshows of relevant historical and contemporary artists. |
