Dear ‍ ‍

This newsletter is all about courses that have the figure, fashion and fabric as their focus. Inspired and shaped by Emily’s daughter Eve – who is currently in her second year of Theatre and Costume Design at Wimbledon College of Art – each course  features outfits and costumes that Eve has created specifically for the Seawhite Studio. These courses represent a wonderful opportunity to become immersed in figure painting and drawing, with the added dimension of fabric and all  the colour, contour and pattern that it offers. There are three courses to choose from (or pick all three!):
Â
In January, Katie will be turning the Seawhite Studio into a catwalk with her short course Figure, Frills & Fashion. This is a  gorgeous jewel-like course where the focus will be looking at colour, texture and pattern as well as form and flesh.
As part of our Pre-recorded offer, Emily has worked with Eve to develop two pre-recorded courses that are focused on painting and drawing the clothed figure:
The great thing about these pre-recorded courses is that once you have purchased them, you have unlimited access to the films, and can watch, pause, and rewind them so that you can catch every pearl of wisdom.
Â
Packed with exercises, demonstrations and graceful poses, these new courses are an excellent resource to any artist wanting to develop their figure-based work, and would definitely appeal to anyone who has enjoyed Emily’s Book,  Drawing and Painting People: A Fresh Approach.‍‍
FIGURE, FRILLS & FASHION
An Expressive Painting Workshop
With Katie Sollohub at the Seawhite Studio
8 – 10 January 2025
£330‍
“What I love about this course is the personality of Eve coming through in the clothes she wears, and how she wears them. There is life and movement in every pose, and every painting. Each person’s response to the subject is part of the conversation and dance between artist, sitter, and the paint. It is a joy.” ~ Katie‍

Start the New Year with this exciting three day course in the Seawhite Studio, working with the wonderful Eve, dressed in her own dynamic and inspirational costumes, designed to adorn and accentuate the body.
Â
Painting from the clothed figure means looking at colour, texture and pattern as much as form and flesh. In this course, Katie will encourage you to celebrate the way fabric adorns the figure: how it changes as it wraps around form, offers glimpses of flesh, how the features of the face emerging from folds and frills.‍

“I love how the colour and pattern of fabrics can give form and structure to a painting: falling in folds of drapery; hugging the figure, or moving wildly and freely like a riotously frilly feather boa. Clothes are an extension of the body, and an expression of the person inside them. We fashion ourselves in particular ways.”

Throughout the course, Katie will refer to artists such as Matisse, Bonnard, Vuillard, Chantal Joffe, Alice Neal, and Jennifer Packer for inspiration. Using innovative creative processes you will make a series of quick studies from the figure in movement, as a warm up; reacquainting yourself with the body as a subject using the fluidity of paint to express its lyrical  dance-like qualities.  You will then start 2 or 3 longer paintings in which you will start to use the language of paint to describe the texture, direction and weight of cloth; how it shrouds, conceals, and reveals the form underneath.
Â
As with all her courses, Katie will encourage you to play and experiment, so that you are not relying simply on observation. As a result  the paintings you begin to make will be fresh and exciting, open to change.‍

Drawing the Clothed Figure is comprised of four films that are full of engaging and valuable demonstrations, exercises, instructions and inspiring poses to help artists create expressive drawings. For this course Eve – as model and costume designer -has created a costume that celebrates her graceful poses and movement, as well as the joys of the handmade, upcycled lace fabric, as it falls and flows around the figure.
Â
The drawings that Emily makes explore different qualities of the body and movement; from fabric draped across skin and flesh, to the poise of the figure and the flow and folds of the fabric. The richness of the mixed media that she is using generates exciting, layered drawings.
 Â
There are two films lasting approximately 40 minutes in which Emily draws and explains her process and decision-making. The  remaining two films are shorter and have lots of beautiful poses that can be paused and used to draw from to create new work using the exercises offered. ‍

This pre-recorded course is comprised of a set of five films in which Eve models her specifically designed costume. This time it is a striking red and black costume, with fantastic accessories, that has statuesque drama, glamour and elegance. There are three films lasting approximately 35 minutes each in which Emily paints and explains her process and decision making.  The remaining two films contain lots of beautiful poses, both seated and standing, that can be paused and used to paint from to create new work using the exercises offered.
Â
Taking the fear away from painting directly from Eve as she poses, Emily uses paint in the same way that she draws; fluidly, boldly and playfully to find the qualities of the body, fabric and attitude. The processes she offers result in fresh, vital and surprising paintings.‍
