Dear
You are warmly invited to the Opening day on
Saturday 7 December 2024, 10am - 4pm.
The exhibition is comprised of over 40 pieces of work - ranging from very large paintings, drawings and tiny paintings - and features two bodies of works that have been inspired by two - distinctly different - places that Emily has walked and worked in for many years. ‘Hot Hill’ describes the rugged coastal hillsides of the Algarve, whereas ‘Woodland Weave’ is inspired by landscapes closer to home and offers a meditation on the essential qualities of nature. The work exhibited is available for sale.

“Walk with me over parched, crumbling, well trodden paths of orange earth. Stride purposefully feeling the sun on your back and the cool Atlantic breeze against your face. Rough, dry, plants brush the skin on your legs. Squint at the shimmering, jewels of brightness. Seek shade in the deep shadows of bushes. Marvel at the silvered stems of plants, brittle and gleaming.” ~ Emily |

Each year, Emily visits the rugged, coastal hillsides in the Algarve in Portugal. The paintings she has created are all about the shimmering heat, deep shadows and tough plants that cling on the hill. She layers, blurs, excavates, draws, rubs, scrapes, blends and reveals her response to the place as she works. |

“Walk with me over cushioning moss; your feet sinking into the soft leafmold. Pick your way through tangles of bramble and bracken. Stand still and feel held in the quietness beneath the trees. Listen to the birdsong and clatter of leaves. Look up through slats of light between branches. Smell the damp and chill in the air.” ~ Emily |

‘Woodland Weave’ is an ongoing series that Emily has worked on for several years now. The large paintings are full of memories of place and are a metaphor for the beauty, impermanence and rawness of Nature. A quiet space for reverie. She cluster marks, distresses, mops, edits, knots and balances between order and chaos in each painting. These paintings are a taster of more to come as she continues with this theme into 2025 on an even larger scale. |
