Dear  ‍ ‍

‍If you want to get away from the unpredictable English weather, you can be guaranteed warmth and sunshine in Portugal in September. Katie and Emily’s Algarve-inspired courses are a chance to recharge on a personal and artistic level,  whilst helping you clarify what really matters to you creatively.

  • Walking and Drawing in the Algarve with Katie Sollohub will explore new ways of creatively responding, absorbing and travelling through a landscape (1 – 7 September 2024).
  • Expressive Painting in the Algarve Landscape: exploring colour and mark making as a personal visual language  with Emily Ball places colour at the forefront of painting, and aims to help artists develop their confidence in transforming dynamic studies into expressive, personal paintings (8 – 14 September, 2024).

To make the most of the cooler ends of the late summer days, both courses will have an early daily start, leaving the hottest part of the day for rest and reflection, with evenings left open for optional yoga, star-lit walks, and following your own practice.  During your stay, you will be able to work in your own shaded space around the villa, where you can comfortably develop your work.‍

“Drawing is vital to my practice, and I am passionate about sharing it. By linking drawing exercises with guided meditation practices I have found a way to help people relax into the process, rather than focus on outcomes, and as expectations diminish so too does anxiety - making space for awareness to grow, and creativity to flow.” ~ Katie‍

Katie’s Algarve course gives you the opportunity to explore processes and materials, and immerse yourself in an inspirational location. It offers you the time and space to find rest and relaxation in the creative process, to reconnect with your self, with nature, and to give yourself time to just be.

At the start of the course you will be presented with a sketchbook in which to record your personal journey through this landscape - using walking, drawing and writing to engage with it. You will be gently guided and supported in the space throughout by Katie with her unique combination of meditation and drawing exercises to tune you into working with all your senses.‍

“Whenever I’ve worked with Katie using her guided meditations I’ve done work I’m really pleased with and that has surprised me and been useful for future work.” ~Emily‍

Something magical happens when Emily and Katie work together, regardless of whether they are co-teaching or sharing the same creative space.  Their long-standing working relationship means that they are able to bounce ideas off each other which inevitably leads to enriching and searching discussions.  How wonderful it would be to be part of these conversations!

“Many thanks to Emily and Katie for their unique approaches, both complimentary and inspiring.[They] are such different personalities who can offer a whole spectrum of ideas between them whilst listening to the group and staying with their individual integrity.”  ~ Julia (previous Summer School participant)

Expressive Painting in the Algarve Landscape

Exploring colour and mark making as a personal visual

language.

With Emily Ball

8 -14 September 2024 | ÂŁ1995

Arrive on Sunday, taught course Monday – Friday, leave Saturday

“I have visited this beautiful place many times and have had the opportunity to study and paint there too. For this course I want to focus on helping artists to use colour as a powerful tool and language.” ~ Emily‍

Image: rugged landscape, the Algarve (Emily Ball)‍

Walking on the paths brushing past wild fennel, navigating between sun bleached plants, across hills down to the beach and sea you will make paintings that capture a sense of place and fleeting experiences. With a honed sense of colour, you’ll be encouraged to notice the glowing red earth, rugged vistas to the sea, the wiry, bleached vegetation and beautiful light – and seek to find their equivalents in paint. Even the invisible and intangible sensations of heat, breeze, birdsong, space and your mood can be translated into colour and marks.

After making studies and gathering materials in the landscape each morning,  you will return to the villa, where Emily will provide practical demonstrations and exercises to enable you to unpack the process of moving from studies on location to more developed paintings. ‍

At the end of this course...

  • You will come away with a valuable collection of painted studies and experiments. Some will be about exploring what can be done with paint, others will be directly made in situ in response to the landscape that surrounds you.
  • You will have a collection of paintings both resolved and begun that are expressive and personal about your experience of being in the landscape.
  • You will have done some writing that will be useful as resource and ideas for future work after the course.
  • You will have enjoyed the space and time to recharge, and may have no expectations of outcomes‍.

“I signed up for the Algarve course because I always find it re-invigorates my own practice.  I loved the whole experience; it is a place where I feel I can experiment and work with others who take their work seriously.  I enjoy the commitment of both Emily and Ros to make the time special and productive.  It’s great to work knowing all the meals and comforts are provided. Getting away to a different location, frees up the mind to concentrate on creativity.” Carolyn Perry‍, previous Algarve student

Emily’s Algarve course follows on from Katie course, and her experience of working with Katie will directly feed into the work she creates during her own course.  These courses are a perfect combination as they feed beautifully into one another.  If you sign up for both you can enjoy a 10% discount.
