Dear Visitor
This Autumn, we’re so excited to be offering two very special courses in the Algarve. We have teamed up once again with the wonderful Rosalind Hodges - Villa Host and fellow artist - to bring you two weeks of painting, drawing, relaxation, sunshine, delicious food, stunning beaches and good company – you won’t want to go home!
The two courses on offer are quite distinct from one another. The first is a taught course, led by Emily and focused on helping you make studies that truly connect with your surroundings and your practice as an artist. The second week is a residency, where artists are invited to work alongside Emily and each other, spending a precious week immersed in their practice, without the usual distractions.
We are hoping that some artists are able to join us for both weeks, as continuing from week 1 to week 2 will, enable them to maintain their momentum and free flow into a unique self-governed daily practice for the second week. The villa and location offer a beautiful, rugged landscape with access to unspoilt beaches, calm spaces and comfort. On the first morning of each course Rosalind will be available to take you on a guided walk to explore the local area and surrounding landscape, to give you the opportunity to choose a location that inspires you.
To get the most from these courses, we recommend a capacity to be able to walk and carry a day pack 2km together with an ability to walk on narrow, uneven, hilly coastal earth paths. If this is not possible then the gardens and landscape that surrounds the house do provide ample inspiration. |

This one-week course is an opportunity for artists to invest in themselves and their practise. It’s all about discovering what it means to make studies of depth, which are full of possibility. Emily will encourage you to engage in a dialogue with your work, while exploring, gathering and researching studies. Numerous practical exercises will help you incorporate different processes into your work practice, encouraging a rich plethora of ideas to flow and build throughout the course. |

Each morning, from 9am – 12.30pm Emily will demonstrate processes and experimental ways of working that could be used to make studies from the landscape. Students have the time to practice and apply these during the sessions, before heading off independently in the afternoon to make studies. At the end of each day, Emily will be available for a daily review. Additionally, from Wednesday – Friday she will offer appointments for one-to-one tutorials that can help you collate, articulate and refine your ideas.

This is a perfect week for working artists, graduates from PAINT FIT, Emily’s Live Online course, or for artists from week 1 of Inspiration from Nature to continue from.
A residency gives artists the opportunity to live and work outside of their usual environments, providing them with time to reflect, research and produce work. Emily will lead the week, encouraging everyone to immerse themselves in their subjects.
The residency is a rare chance to witness Emily and Rosalind (host/artist) in their own rhythm and creative processes as they work. There is not a teaching element to this ‘course’, but emphasis will be placed on support, exchange, collaboration, reflection and wellbeing. At the end of each day there will be ample time to discuss your work/processes with Emily and each other.
